More than 70,000 police officers are set to patrol France this weekend as the NFL presses forward with its first-ever regular-season game in Paris.
Stade de France Showdown Set for Sunday
The Pittsburgh Steelers and the New Orleans Saints are scheduled to play on Sunday at Stade de France, just outside Paris. The high-stakes international fixture comes despite escalating nationwide protests and a public suggestion from U.S. President Donald Trump that the league should postpone the matchup.
Curfews and Louvre Closures Amid Unrest
Civil unrest across France began in mid-September with high school student demonstrations over poor educational conditions before expanding to include widespread anger over rising inflation. What started as peaceful gatherings escalated into violent demonstrations that saw government offices attacked and local shops looted. The Athletic reported that additional protests are scheduled. A nationwide curfew has been implemented, and prominent cultural sites including the Louvre Museum remain closed to the public.
Steelers Cancel Fan Events as Teams Adjust
Despite the volatile security environment, league officials confirmed that the game and most surrounding fan events will proceed as scheduled. However, team caution is visible on the ground. The Pittsburgh Steelers canceled a planned fan event at a pub in the Bastille district as a preventative measure. Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints squad has continued its training sessions in the Paris region ahead of Sunday’s kickoff.
Trump Questions Safety During Friday Briefing
U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the situation during a Friday press briefing, voicing concern over the safety and stability of the host city. Having previously criticized the French demonstrations, Trump told reporters that the situation looked unfavorable and suggested that the NFL would have been justified in delaying the contest given the severe difficulties facing France.
Global Series Expands to Melbourne and Rio
The Paris fixture forms part of a broader international series designed to expand the league’s global footprint. For the current season, the NFL is staging nine games outside the United States. Other international matchups include fixtures in Melbourne, Australia, featuring the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams, alongside games in Rio de Janeiro, London, Madrid, Munich, and Mexico City.
