Netherlands U21 to Face Denmark in Euro 2027 Play-offs, Voetbalzone reports

Jong Oranje will face Jong Denmark in a two-legged playoff in November for a spot in the European Championship, Voetbalzone reported. The draw, conducted on Friday morning in Nyon, Switzerland, set up the decisive fixtures that will determine the final qualifiers for the tournament scheduled for next summer in Serbia and Albania.

The Dramatic Finish in Group G That Secured the Playoff Spot

Michael Reiziger’s squad reached the playoffs only after a tense conclusion to their qualifying campaign last Tuesday. Jong Oranje entered the final matchday facing elimination following losses to the youth teams of Israel and Norway earlier in the cycle. On the closing day of group play, the Dutch secured a 4-0 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina while simultaneously receiving help from Norway, which held Israel to a 1-1 draw. That combination of results lifted Jong Oranje into second place in Group G, keeping their tournament hopes alive.

Norway claimed the direct ticket as group winner. Marvin Young watched from the bench as his side ran out to a 4-0 win while Jong Noorwegen scored a late equalizer against Jong Israël, allowing Jong Oranje to escape elimination and finish as runner-up in Group G alongside seven other countries.

Denmark Beat Netherlands in Previous Meeting

Jong Denmark advanced to the playoffs after finishing second in their respective qualifying group behind group opponents that included Belgium, Austria, Wales, and Belarus, having collected a total of fifteen points across their eight qualifying matches—three more than Jong Oranje. The two nations previously met during the group stage of the 2025 European Under-21 Championship, where Denmark claimed a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands.

Two Legs Determine 2027 Championship Qualification

The playoff tie will be contested across two legs during the upcoming international window in November, with the first match played in Denmark as Michael Reiziger’s team plays an away fixture first followed by a home match. The winner on aggregate across the two matches will secure qualification for the 2027 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, which will be hosted jointly by Albania and Serbia in June 2027.

Ten Nations Secure Spots Before Final Playoffs

The host nations Albania and Serbia participate automatically in the tournament. Croatia, Norway, Portugal, England, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Belgium and Spain already secured their spots as participants coming out of qualification on Tuesday. The final four tickets are decided in the playoffs, where the other three matchups feature Iceland against Greece, Finland against Ireland, and Turkey against Czechia.
