Netflix Faces Growth Slowdown Ahead of Q3 Earnings, But Analysts Say Valuation Discount Is Overdone

Netflix shares trade at a 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio of 19.9, representing a 39 percent discount compared to the platform’s five-year historical average of 32.4, according to an analysis published by Daishin Securities. The sharp contraction follows a decline of more than 24 percent in the company’s stock price over the preceding three-month period.

Third-Quarter Revenue Guidance and the Shift to Advertising

Netflix is scheduled to release its third-quarter financial results on October 21. For 16 quarters, the streaming service has posted double-digit year-over-year revenue growth. That trajectory has decelerated through recent reporting cycles, moving from 17.6 percent down to 16.2 percent and subsequently 13.4 percent. The company’s internal guidance for third-quarter revenue growth projects an 11.7 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

Market analysts note that the gains previously driven by password-sharing restrictions are beginning to taper off. In response, corporate strategy has shifted toward expanded advertising initiatives and subscription price increases. Netflix has outlined an annual advertising revenue target of 3 billion dollars, roughly double the figure recorded in the prior year. The third-quarter window marks the initial period where recent U.S. price adjustments apply across a full quarter, coinciding with the commencement of National Football League broadcasts on the platform.

Cho Jae-wan, a researcher at Daishin Securities, stated that the focal point of the upcoming earnings release will not simply be whether top-line figures exceed guidance, but whether growth rates show signs of slipping into single digits. Cho noted that because lower-tier ad-supported subscription plans generate less revenue per user than standard tiers, a broader shift toward ad-supported models introduces a structural dilution of average revenue per user.

Profit Margins and Market Forecasts

Profitability indicators remain stable despite the deceleration in revenue growth. The company reported a second-quarter operating margin of 33.4 percent, outperforming the annual corporate target of 31.5 percent. With content amortization expenses expected to ease through the back half of the year, analysts project that margin contraction risks remain limited.

Consensus estimates from market observers peg third-quarter revenue at 12.56 billion dollars, with earnings per share at 0.80 dollars and operating profit standing at 4.19 billion dollars. By comparison, internal company guidance forecasts revenue of 12.86 billion dollars alongside earnings per share of 0.82 dollars.

Investment firms have adopted a cautious tone heading into the announcement. Both Morgan Stanley and Barclays recently lowered their respective price targets to 80 dollars and 70 dollars. Despite the downward revisions from Wall Street institutions, Daishin Securities maintains a buy rating on the stock, arguing that the recent sell-off has thoroughly priced in the deceleration.

The current discount is in an excessive region, Cho stated, adding that while the lack of a confirmed bottom for the decelerating growth trend limits total conviction, the tone of fourth-quarter guidance will ultimately dictate the direction of any share price revaluation.
