Monchi assumes sporting control at RCD Espanyol

Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo—universally known as Monchi (San Fernando, Cádiz, 1968)—has stepped into a new executive chapter by taking charge of the RCD Espanyol sporting area as general sports director, from which he will lead the club’s Sporting Area, as RCD Espanyol reported. Different sporting areas will maintain their current executive directions, which will now report to the new General Sports Direction headed by Monchi. His career includes starting as sporting director of Sevilla FC in July 2000, serving 17 seasons in his first stage, and returning from April 2019 to June 2023. He helped build a project winning 11 titles between 2006 and 2023, and his honors list includes seven UEFA Europa League titles, two Copas del Rey, one UEFA Super Cup, one Supercopa de España, and a promotion to the First Division.

Casual Beginnings in England

The partnership originated away from the pitch during Monchi’s well-deserved break following a two-year spell alongside Unai Emery at Aston Villa, when Alan Pace, president of RCD Espanyol, called Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo to get to know him. Alan Pace reached out to arrange an initial dinner described by the native of San Fernando as lacking any professional agenda, which naturally extended to coffee where cards were put on the table.

Modern Analytics and Market Realities

Reflecting on 26 years in football management across Sevilla, Roma, and Aston Villa, where he subsequently developed his career and consolidated a competitive project established in European positions and a regular protagonist in continental competitions such as the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, Monchi addressed the evolving challenge of discovering talent in a modern market saturated with analytics. The widespread availability of match footage platforms and data metrics has transformed sporting departments into cosmopolitan operations that dominate markets more and make everything more complicated. While young players remain discoverable, heightened market competition makes unearthing talents considerably more difficult.

Navigating Financial Limits and Squad Ambitions

Adopting a low salary cap at Espanyol required swift adjustments with the help of people inside the club, a framework Monchi anticipated from Alan Pace when he signed. Asked if there was fear in signing with Espanyol fighting for category retention, Monchi answered there was no fear, but rather concern and tension, because the project had and has much more viability staying in First Division than having been relegated. Although he had a clause to leave in that case, when the appointment was announced, he already told Alan he would stay no matter what happened, as anything else did not seem professional to him. Internally, the sporting director relies on staff consensus where between seven and eight names are narrowed down to one, bringing together all opinions to make them his own.

Relentless Routine and Immediate Focus

Personal experiences have fundamentally shifted his outlook, including having to dismiss managers with whom he had a magnificent relationship such as Marcelino, Michel, or Manolo Jiménez, noting that while it is complicated in the moment, time gives or takes away reasons for everyone later on.
