Mixed Sports in Argentina: Recreational Growth vs. Federated Divide

Sports or physical activity participation in Argentina grew to 55 percent by 2023, up from 50.9 percent in 2021, according to National Physical Activity Survey data. While recreational football matches, padel courts, and social leagues across La Plata, Berisso, and Ensenada increasingly feature men and women playing side by side, adult federation-level competitions remain predominantly divided into traditional men’s and women’s categories.

Recreational Football Breaks Traditional Roster Lines

Amateur football complexes across La Plata, including venues like Garra Charrúa, see mixed-gender five-a-side and seven-a-side matches. Academic research from the National University of La Plata highlights that these informal fixtures often operate without a specific regulatory structure, relying instead on agreements and rules established by the participants.

At first we were two girls playing among all guys, but then more friends started coming and now we just form mixed teams directly, said Lucía, from La Plata. Participants note that team composition depends heavily on individual skill levels and securing enough players for a full match rather than enforcing strict gender divisions.

This informal integration contrasts with official tournament structures. Although the Liga Amateur Platense incorporated women’s activity starting in 2014, and various children’s leagues permit mixed-gender youth squads, adult competitive play across regional federations maintains separate brackets for men and women.

Padel Courts Drive Social Double Integration

Padel represents another primary engine for coed sports growth, fueled by its flexible doubles format. The Argentine Padel Association reported a more than 30 percent increase in the number of courts over a three-year period, while a booking platform identified padel as the discipline capturing the highest proportion of slots at 46.3 percent in one of its measurements.

We play two or three times a week and rotate the pairs, sometimes two women and two men, other times three and one, with the main goal of keeping the match competitive, said Carolina, from Ensenada. Dozens of establishments linked to the activity operate across La Plata, Berisso, and Ensenada, accommodating social matches and recreational tournaments where mixed pairings are common.

Data from the National Survey of Physical Activity tracks a concurrent rise in organized competition participation from 30.2 percent to 37.7 percent overall. However, a persistent competitive gap remains between genders, as 46.4 percent of surveyed men participated in organized competitions in 2023 compared to 26.3 percent of women.

Emerging Disciplines Expand Beyond Traditional Formats

Beyond traditional ball sports, alternative disciplines contributing to the region’s active profile include ultimate frisbee, quadball, pickleball, and newcom.

Official statistical tracking for the exact volume of mixed-gender sports participants at the municipal level in La Plata, Berisso, and Ensenada remains unavailable. Current evaluations rely on a composite of national activity surveys, academic studies, registries from federations, clubs, municipalities, and private facility offerings to measure the scope of the trend.
