Hamburger SV player Miro Muheim has transformed his status from a squad player with an uncertain future into a decisive matchwinner, scoring a blistering 117 km/h winner against VfB Stuttgart to secure the club’s third victory in a row. The 28-year-old Swiss international, initially sidelined and pushed behind summer options on the left flank, seized an unexpected opportunity in central midfield and capitalized on a deep squad to help guide HSV to ninth place in the standings with nine points after six matches.
The journey from the fringes of the squad to the center of the celebrations caught up to Muheim at the final whistle of the Stuttgart fixture, when he collapsed from exhaustion in the center circle before disappearing beneath a pile of celebrating teammates. HSV entered the summer with few plans for the promotion hero, preferring 17-year-old Louis Lemke and Norwegian World Cup participant David Möller Wolfe on the left side of defense. Yet injuries and tactical shifts forced manager Merlin Polzin’s hand, opening a path back into the side for a player who had returned from the World Cup with injuries.
Midfield Conversion at TSG Hoffenheim
The tactical pivot began on a Saturday in Sinsheim against TSG Hoffenheim, where HSV captain Nicolai Remberg suffered a first-half knee injury that eventually required successful cruciate ligament surgery. With central midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga also absent due to muscle problems and Bilal Nadir stepping into the lineup, Polzin deployed Muheim in the unfamiliar defensive midfield role. After an initial adjustment period, Muheim sparked a turnaround from a 1–2 deficit. He delivered the cross for Terem Moffi’s equalizer before striking a fierce direct volley in stoppage time to seal a win in front of more than 10,000 traveling supporters.

Muheim clocked his first decisive strike at 105 km/h, but he topped that figure a week later at home. Facing VfB Stuttgart before 57,000 spectators, Muheim collected a cleared ball during a counterattack in the 88th minute and unleashed a 25-meter drive clocked at 117 km/h that secured a 1–0 victory. “I have the space to pull the trigger, and I just let fly, and naturally it goes in perfectly,” Muheim told Sky after the match. Teammate Sebastiaan Bornauw praised the left-footed player’s technique, noting that if Muheim took that shot ten times, he would likely score at least eight.
Overcoming a Slow Start Under Merlin Polzin
The recent surge marks a stark contrast to HSV’s opening weeks, which included heavy 0–5 defeats against 1. FSV Mainz 05 and at RB Leipzig. Muheim missed the first three matchdays due to injuries and did not make the matchday squad for a 2–1 win over 1. FC Köln. Polzin credited the player’s attitude during those difficult weeks, noting that Muheim responded through action rather than complaints. “Miro has accepted the new role,” Polzin said, praising the player’s willingness to accept a new positional assignment with high intensity.

The victories over Hoffenheim and Stuttgart lift HSV to three wins in a row in the top flight for the first time since the 2010/11 campaign under manager Armin Veh, when the club defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach, Schalke 04, and Eintracht Frankfurt in succession. Polzin admitted he was unaware of the historical milestone given the club’s seven-year absence in the second division, emphasizing instead that the current squad depth allows Hamburg to withstand significant injuries to key figures like Remberg and Lokonga without a catastrophic drop in performance.
Upcoming Fixtures and Standings
With nine points from six matches, HSV sits ninth in the Bundesliga table. The team returns to action on Saturday at 15.30 Uhr against promoted side SC Paderborn, aiming to extend their winning run.
