From Montevideo Poverty to European Turf
Sporting CP wing-back Maxi Araújo has mapped the raw distance from severe financial distress in Montevideo to the upper tiers of European football, opening up in an interview with AUF TV about the hardships that shaped his early career.
Growing up, heavy rains consistently flooded his family home. The 26-year-old recalled that Jorge Giordano—currently the national team’s director of selections and his former coach at Montevideo Wanderers—stepped in when times were darkest, paying to repair his leaking childhood roof. Araújo described seeing the completed repairs as one of the most emotional experiences of his life, a gesture that gave him a renewed opportunity to pursue the sport.
Tactical Freedom Under Diego Forlán
Discussing his role under new Uruguay manager Diego Forlán, Araújo explained that the former striker encourages him to play with tactical freedom. While he primarily features as a left-back for Sporting CP, Forlán deploys him further up the pitch as an eccentric winger or central attacker who makes diagonal runs toward the goal.
The numbers reflect that positional versatility. This season, Araújo has recorded one goal and two assists across seven appearances for Sporting CP, alongside international goals scored against Japan and a two-goal haul during the 2026 World Cup across three matches.
Honoring Luis Suárez on the World Stage
That international stage also brought moments of profound personal connection. During Uruguay’s match against Cape Verde at the 2026 World Cup, Araújo celebrated a goal by mimicking Luis Suárez, who watched the fixture from the stands. Araújo noted that Suárez previously treated him like a son during their time together in the national squad.
Araújo and Zalazar Return to Portugal After India Friendly
The demands of modern football leave little time for sentiment. Following an upcoming international friendly against India in Kolkata scheduled for Tuesday, Araújo and teammate Rodrigo Zalazar are set to travel back to Portugal ahead of Sporting CP’s away fixture against Braga on October 9 at 20:15 local time for the eighth round of the league season.
