Italian judoka Matteo Piras is mapping out a fresh four-year campaign toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games after anchoring his career in perseverance, OA Sport reported. Piras secured his debut Olympic appearance at the Paris 2024 Games in the -66 kg division at age 30, reaching the individual round of 16 and a fifth-place finish in the mixed team event before continuing his international schedule on the global circuit.
Decades of Training Preceded the Paris Milestone
Piras first stepped onto a judo tatami at age three, spending decades chasing the Olympic benchmark set by older generations of athletes. That trajectory culminated at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he competed in the under-66 kilogram weight category. Following his run to the round of 16 and the mixed team’s fifth-place result, the Italian competitor did not step away from the sport.
European Championship Success and the World Tour
Competitive momentum carried into the subsequent season when Piras claimed another fifth-place finish at the 2025 European Championships in Podgorica, OA Sport reported. By 2026, he remained an active competitor on the international World Tour. Those tournament appearances form the foundation of his ongoing qualification cycle for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Reflecting on Experience and Mentoring Youth
During an appearance on the interview series Focus, hosted by Alice Liverani, Piras discussed the human side of elite sport, addressing the psychological weight of lifelong goals, the reality of defeat, and his evolving relationship with younger generations of judokas. The conversation explored how athletes translate years of physical and mental discipline into mentorship, passing lessons learned from decades of competition to rising competitors within the Italian federation framework.

The Road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Cycle
With the qualification window for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games underway, Piras continues to train and compete within the international circuit governed by the International Judo Federation.
