Masanori Sugiura will take charge of the Japan industrial league baseball national team as manager on October 1, 2026, with an appointment running through the 21st Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, in 2030. Nippon Life Insurance announced the appointment, positioning the former three-time Olympic player to lead the national squad’s upcoming international tournament cycle and player selection camps.
Leadership Appointment for the 2030 Asian Games Cycle
The appointment places Sugiura, currently a corporate investigator within Nippon Life’s sustainability management promotion department, at the helm of the national team through November 2030. His duties will span oversight of international competitions scheduled between 2026 and 2030, alongside comprehensive preparation programs. Those preparatory duties include running selection and training camps while dispatching staff to scout various regional and national tournaments, according to the corporate announcement.
Sugiura Won Medals at Three Olympic Games
Sugiura’s association with the national program stretches back over three decades across multiple playing and coaching roles. He joined Nippon Life Insurance in 1991, quickly establishing himself as a dominant right-handed pitcher in the corporate leagues.

Later that same year, Sugiura wore the national colors at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, returning home with a bronze medal. He added an Asian Games gold medal in Hiroshima in 1994, followed by an Olympic silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games. He concluded his playing career in 2000 as team captain for the Japanese delegation at the Sydney Olympics.
Transition to Coaching and Corporate Support
Following his retirement from active play in 2000, Sugiura moved directly into coaching and administrative support within corporate and national setups. He served as manager of the Nippon Life Insurance baseball club from 2006 until December 2009. In 2015, he joined the national team coaching staff as pitching coach, later transitioning to a senior advisory role for the squad in 2024 before stepping up to the manager post.

The Baseball Federation of Japan, known as JABA, operates as the governing body for adult industrial league baseball across nine regional blocks and 46 prefectural federations. The organization oversees tournament operations and grassroots promotion under its mission to energize Japan through baseball. Nippon Life Insurance stated that the managerial appointment forms part of its broader corporate support for athletics under the banner of its “Play, Support” initiative.
