Marta Kostyuk Praises Czech Tennis Players at Wuhan Open

World No. 10 Marta Kostyuk expressed astonishment at the depth of Czech women’s tennis ahead of the Wuhan Open, questioning how the nation consistently produces elite players on the WTA Tour. Speaking with CANAL+ Sport, the Ukrainian star highlighted a competitive landscape that currently features five Czech players inside the world’s top 30 rankings.

Wuhan Open Praise for Czech Tennis Depth

The Czech Republic established itself as a premier powerhouse in women’s professional tennis, a status reinforced by rankings that place three players inside the world’s top ten. Linda Nosková and Karolína Muchová share elite status alongside Kostyuk, while Marie Bouzková, Nikola Bartůňková, and Sára Bejlek anchor the broader elite tier between the 28th and 30th positions.

It feels like every Czech player who breaks through is met with admiration, Kostyuk told CANAL+ Sport before the tournament, as reported by Tenis portál. How do you manufacture them there? The level of your sport is amazing, especially tennis is incredible. We always have so many Czech players.

That depth translated directly to the tournament grounds in Hubei, China. The Wuhan Open main draw featured an identical contingent of six Ukrainian and six Czech competitors.

I am proud that we have the same number of players here, Kostyuk said. I don’t think there is anything that could make me prouder.

Nikola Bartůňková Breakthrough Draws Attention

Kostyuk singled out Nikola Bartůňková as one of the standout breakthrough performers of the season, pointing to consistent performances across multiple surfaces. The young Czech prospect transitioned smoothly to the main WTA circuit over the past year.

I saw that she played very well in Beijing and generally throughout the season, Kostyuk noted regarding Bartůňková’s recent trajectory. She has excellent results on all surfaces. It’s exciting.

Bartůňková’s ascent mirrors a broader developmental pipeline that consistently feeds the upper echelons of professional tennis. While established stars like Muchová anchor deep Grand Slam runs, younger competitors continue to secure ranking points rapidly across both hardcourt and clay events.

Health Hurdles and Wuhan Exit

Kostyuk’s tournament campaign in Wuhan met an early end following an opening-round defeat to Maria Sakkari. The Ukrainian entered the tournament after an extended injury layoff that severely impacted her qualification bid for the season-ending WTA Finals.

While a mathematical path to the prestigious year-end championship remains viable, qualification relies entirely on favorable results during late-season events leading into Indian Wells, leaving her participation chances minimal.
