Marcel Wontorra Named Managing Director of Frauen-Bundesliga GmbH

Marcel Wontorra will take over as the first Geschäftsführer of the newly formed Frauen-Bundesliga GmbH (FBL), stepping down from his current role as chief operating officer of the sports streaming platform Dyn Sport, according to the article. The FBL presidium and club representatives involved in the selection process unanimously appointed the 35-year-old media manager to build and run the league’s new operational organization.

Stepping Away from Dyn Sport for a New Leadership Role

Wontorra has served on the management team of Dyn Sport since March 2022, helping build the platform from its early startup days under S Nation Media. His departure from the sports-streaming service follows a career that includes previous work at Axel Springer SE, where he served as office manager for Chief Executive Officer Mathias Döpfner.

While his appointment was announced, the exact date of his transition to the FBL remains open. Because his contract with Dyn is still active, Wontorra is not involved in the ongoing media rights tender for the upcoming two seasons, which runs through the end of November, according to industry reports.

Building the Independent Frauen-Bundesliga Operation

The appointment comes as the women’s top flight prepares for complete independence from the German Football Association (DFB). On Sept. 18, an extraordinary DFB Bundestag voted to spin off the league, establishing a dedicated subsidiary modeled after the men’s Bundesliga. Under the agreed-upon timeline, the FBL e.V. will formally take over the organization, execution, and commercialization of the Frauen-Bundesliga on July 1, 2027.

FBL Katharina Kiel praised the unanimous choice, describing Wontorra as a proven sports and media manager who bridges commercial acumen with execution strength. Kiel emphasized that his pragmatic approach and entrepreneurial mindset are essential for the league’s formative phase.

Wontorra outlined clear priorities for his new post, pointing to the growth potential of the division. Together with the clubs, he aims to expand digital and broadcast reach while increasing the league’s appeal for athletes, supporters, sponsors, and media partners alike.
