Marcel Desailly Points to Italy’s Youth and Training Deficit Ahead of France Clash
Former France and AC Milan defender Marcel Desailly stated that Italy must accelerate its football reconstruction to compete with the world’s elite, pointing specifically to a lack of investment in Italian player development.
Speaking to the Italian sports daily Corriere dello Sport ahead of the fixture against France, the 1998 World Cup winner highlighted the vast talent pool available to his home country compared to the Squadra Azzurra. “We have three national teams: France A, France B, and France C, and we can win major titles with each of them,” Desailly explained to the publication.
Squadra Azzurra Faces Rising Continental Competition
While calling for patience regarding the current Italian setup, Desailly warned that continental rivals continue to progress at a rapid pace. “You have to redouble your efforts to make up for the accumulated delay,” he stated in the interview.
Italy has been away from the last three World Cups. Despite these struggles, Desailly expressed strong confidence in Roberto Mancini, whom he views as the right figure to steer the national team through its ongoing sporting crisis. “No one is better placed than Mancini to overcome the major crisis you are going through,” Desailly said, while noting satisfaction at seeing more young prospects break into the senior squad.

Zinedine Zidane Prepares for Stade de France Debut
The former central defender also offered backing to Zinedine Zidane ahead of his debut at the Stade de France against Italy. “Zinedine is very intelligent, he knows what success means, and we have such potential that he will have no trouble getting results quickly,” Desailly remarked.
The fixture at the Stade de France marks another chapter in the storied footballing rivalry between the two European powerhouses as both nations look toward upcoming international cycles.
