FC Bayern Munich will face Viking Stavanger in the UEFA Champions League without Manuel Neuer in goal after the veteran captain felt discomfort in his foot, prompting manager Vincent Kompany to hand Jonas Urbig the starting spot in Norway.
Kompany Confirms Medical Decision on Neuer
Speaking at the pre-match press conference on the eve of the fixture, Vincent Kompany addressed speculation surrounding his starting goalkeeper following Neuer’s recent performance struggles against FC Augsburg. Neuer had experienced a feeling in his foot that ruled him out of competitive action. Kompany described the decision as purely medical rather than disciplinary, noting that the club would avoid taking any unnecessary risks with their captain’s fitness.
Despite being ruled out of the starting lineup, Neuer traveled with the squad on the charter flight to Scandinavia. The coaching staff initially believed the goalkeeper might manage light training sessions upon arrival in Stavanger, but medical evaluations confirmed that Jonas Urbig would step between the posts for the league-phase encounter.
Training Adjustments for Artificial Turf in Norway
The fixture in Stavanger marks a rare competitive challenge for the German record champions, representing only their second official fixture on artificial turf in club history. Their previous match on synthetic ground ended in a 2-2 draw against Spartak Moscow on November 22, 2006. To prepare the squad for the unusual playing surface at the Lyse Arena, Kompany altered the team’s traditional travel and training schedule.
Instead of holding their final training session on the grass pitches at Säbener Straße in Munich, the squad flew to Norway early to test the synthetic surface. Kompany acknowledged that in his 20-year professional career, he had never played on artificial turf. He emphasized that his players needed to get a direct feel for the ground and evaluate their footwear choices ahead of kickoff.
Player Perspectives on the Lyse Arena Surface
DFB captain Joshua Kimmich noted that modern artificial surfaces have evolved significantly over the years and no longer resemble traditional hockey fields, expressing confidence that high-level football remains possible on the material. However, striker Harry Kane pointed out that synthetic turf places distinct physical demands on players.

Kane remarked that athletes must adapt quickly to a surface that places slightly more stress on the knees and ankles. He noted that selecting the right footwear is essential to mitigating the risk of injury on the faster-moving ball and differing bounce associated with artificial pitches. Kane also observed that playing on the surface in autumn is preferable to navigating the freezing conditions of a Scandinavian winter.
Standings and Upcoming Fixtures
Bayern enter the fixture following a 5-0 victory over FK Bodø/Glimt in their opening match of the renewed Champions League league phase. Sporting director Max Eberl emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum during the club’s ongoing sequence of matches in Norway. Viking Stavanger enters the contest having lost just one competitive home fixture at the Lyse Arena since August of the previous year, following a 3-1 defeat to VfB Stuttgart in September.
