Maignan Returns to Udine Amid Online Abuse from Milan Supporters

Mike Maignan Returns to Bluenergy Stadium Amid Fan Backlash and Historical Tensions

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan returns to the Bluenergy Stadium to face Udinese, confronting a complex backdrop of online harassment from his own supporters following a recent red card in Europe League play and the enduring memory of racist abuse he suffered at the same venue in January 2024.

More than a thousand days have passed since that afternoon in Friuli, yet the underlying issues surrounding player treatment remain persistent. Maignan finds himself targeted once again, shifting from the vitriol of opposition fans to abuse directed at him on social media by sections of the Milan fanbase following his dismissal against Bournemouth.

According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, the French international faces a tense atmosphere as he steps back onto the pitch where one of Italian football’s most high-profile anti-racism protests unfolded.

The January 2024 Confrontation at Udine

During the 2023-24 Serie A fixture on Jan. 20, 2024, Maignan alerted the fourth official to racist abuse emanating from the stands behind his goal at the 33-minute mark. Frustrated by the lack of immediate intervention, he left his penalty area, walked toward manager Stefano Pioli’s bench, and instructed his teammates to walk off the pitch.

Referee Fabio Maresca suspended the match immediately. Following a five-minute stoppage and persuasion from his coach, Maignan agreed to return, and the game resumed. Disciplinary measures followed, with Udinese ordered to play a subsequent match behind closed doors and identified individuals facing lifetime bans from the stadium.

Maignan Faces Udinese Despite Past Friction and Injuries

Maignan’s subsequent trips to Udine have carried lingering friction. In April 2025, nearly a year and a half after the incident, home supporters initially greeted him with jeers before offering applause as he was forced off injured in the 56th minute following a collision with Álex Jiménez.

Another scheduled return last season was canceled after the goalkeeper suffered a calf injury six days prior against Bologna. Now, despite the recent frustration surrounding his sending-off against Bournemouth, Maignan is expected to start in goal for Milan as the side travels to face Udinese.
