Luka Doncic has confirmed that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is actively supporting the development of the NBA Europe project. In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, the Los Angeles Lakers star provided insight into his involvement in European basketball expansion and his ongoing dialogue with the league’s leadership regarding the initiative.
Doncic confirms Adam Silver’s interest in NBA Europe
The Slovenian guard, who led the NBA last season with an average of 33.5 points per game, revealed that he has held multiple conversations with Adam Silver concerning the growth of the game in Europe. While Doncic noted that he could not disclose all the details regarding the league’s internal planning, he characterized the Commissioner’s stance as highly positive.
“He is very enthusiastic about the NBA Europe project,” Doncic said. “I can’t tell you everything. But he is enthusiastic.”
The BC Roma initiative
Doncic’s interest in European basketball infrastructure is tied to his collaboration with Donnie Nelson. According to the interview, Nelson approached the six-time All-Star with a proposal to invest in an Italian basketball team. Doncic accepted the offer, leading to a group led by Nelson purchasing the Vanoli Cremona franchise.

The team was subsequently relocated to Rome and rebranded as BC Roma. This project is part of the discussion on how the NBA might integrate or support professional basketball structures within the European market.
