Lucas Miedler and Neil Oberleitner won the doubles title at the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai, defeating Francisco Cabral and JJ Tracy 6:3, 6:4 in Sunday’s final, Kurier reported.
Playing in just their second tournament together as a pairing, the Austrian duo needed one hour and six minutes to secure the trophy on the hard courts of the Chinese metropolis. The victory marks the first ATP 1000 title for both players, coming after a successful debut a month earlier in the Davis Cup against Belgium in Vienna’s Prater.
The Path Through Shanghai
Miedler and Oberleitner arrived in Shanghai following a quarterfinal run at their debut event in Tokyo. Their week at the Masters 1000 tournament featured several tight encounters, notably a three-set semifinal victory on Saturday against the German pair Jakob Schnaitter and Mark Wallner. Sport.ORF.at reported that the Austrians dropped the first set’s early break before recovering to win 7:5, 6:3 in an hour and fifteen minutes, converting their fifth set point in the opener before cruising through the second set 6:3.
Throughout the draw, the newly formed team navigated a difficult field that included opening-round wins over fellow countryman Alexander Erler and America’s Robert Cash. In the title match against Portugal’s Cabral and America’s Tracy, Miedler and Oberleitner maintained control from the baseline and at the net to close out the straight-sets win.
Coaching and Long-Term Partnership Potential
During their run in Shanghai, the duo received guidance from former top doubles player Alexander Peya. Kurier noted that Miedler and Oberleitner are the first Austrian team to capture an ATP Masters 1000 doubles title since Peya triumphed in Madrid in 2018.

Miedler brought significant experience to the partnership, having already secured 13 ATP doubles titles prior to the tournament. Oberleitner earned his first tour-level trophy earlier in the season in Winston-Salem and reached the quarterfinals at the French Open. Reflecting on their chemistry, Miedler pointed to their history together, noting they previously captured a Future tournament title in 2020.
ÖTV Sports Director and Davis Cup Captain Jürgen Melzer praised the team’s composure during critical moments of their matches, telling Kurier that their calm execution in decisive situations defines championship pairs. Melzer added that the team showed their capability early during their Davis Cup outings and projected that the duo will present a major challenge on tour next season.
Rankings and Upcoming Schedule
The 1000-point champion haul alters the ATP doubles liverankings significantly for both players. Miedler moves up to world number 19, while Oberleitner climbs to number 23.

Following their success in Asia, the team plans to compete at the tournament in Almaty before returning to Austria for the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, which begins on October 26.
