Liège Basket began its BNXT League campaign with a 94-70 loss to Brussels at the ING Arena, a defeat heavily influenced by administrative complications that sidelined the team’s non-European players. Despite leading at halftime, the Liège squad—composed primarily of young Belgian talent—could not maintain its momentum against a more experienced Brussels roster in the second half.
Administrative issues limit roster depth
The club confirmed that logistical hurdles regarding the residency status of its extra-European players forced a significantly altered lineup for the season opener. In a statement, the club explained that the affected players were required to travel to Brussels in person to finalize mandatory documentation for their legal status within Belgium. This procedural requirement left the team, known as the “Sang et Marine,” without key members of its professional rotation for the inaugural match.
First-half performance keeps Liège competitive
Despite the roster limitations, Liège kept pace with the hosts throughout the first two quarters. The team’s younger players delivered notable individual performances, with Clément Matisse recording 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Mathis Bizimana and Maxime Bilolo Katuala also contributed significantly, each scoring 16 points. These efforts allowed Liège to enter the halftime break with a narrow 43-42 lead, momentarily silencing the atmosphere at the ING Arena.
Brussels asserts control after halftime
The momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter as Brussels increased its defensive intensity and offensive efficiency. Yannick Dammen led the charge for the home side with 18 points, while Tucker Richardson added 13 points and 5 rebounds. As the game progressed, the depth and physical pace of the Brussels rotation overwhelmed the younger Liège side. Contributions from Sacha Di Prospero, Romain Bruwier, and Daniel Bula were not enough to bridge the growing gap on the scoreboard, as the deficit widened in the final minutes.

Upcoming home opener against Limburg
Liège will look to regroup for its first home game of the season this Friday at the Province Ballons Arena. The team is scheduled to face neighbors Hubo Limburg United in a matchup that offers an opportunity to integrate the full roster and reconnect with their home crowd. The club has not yet provided a definitive update on whether the administrative documentation for the sidelined players will be fully resolved in time for the Friday tip-off.
