Latvian Motocross Team Achieves Historic 4th Place at Motocross of Nations

Latvia secured its highest-ever finish at the Motocross of Nations, claiming fourth place overall at the historic Ernée circuit in France in front of 100 tūkstoš skatītāju. Led by veteran rider Pauls Jonass alongside brothers Jānis Mārtiņš Reišulis and Kārlis Alberts Reišulis, the national team surpassed its previous best performances with consistent rides across the weekend’s grueling motos.

Historic Milestone in Ernée

The Latvian squad entered the weekend with modest stated goals before exceeding expectations on the French track. Pauls Jonass remarked that while the team initially targeted a top-five position and aimed to do their best, a fourth-place finish stands as a massive achievement for the country. Reporting on the event, LSM noted that after the first two of three motos, the team even flirted with the possibility of a podium finish before ultimately settling into fourth overall.

Conditions at the Ernée venue offered an ideal backdrop for the international showcase. With a crowd of 100 tūkstoš skatītāju fans surrounding a course featuring expansive spectator camping and high-level infrastructure, the venue provided the ultimate test for the 32 competing nations. France previously hosted 102 tūkstoši skatītāju three years prior when the host nation took victory.

Latvia Secures Main Event Spot with Strong Roster

Latvia arrived at the paddock with its strongest roster to date, as all three team members finished inside the top ten of their respective World Championship overall standings. During Saturday qualifying sessions across the three motorcycle classes, the squad placed fifth among the 32 entering countries to easily secure a spot in the 20-team main event.

Jonass competed in the MXOpen class, finishing third in his first moto and eighth in the final race despite suffering a crash. In post-race comments covered by Sportacentrs.com, Jonass expressed slight regret over the late-race fall in his second outing, noting that he likely could have finished sixth without the mistake after pushing hard to close the gap before sliding out.

Overcoming Adversity on Sunday

The Reišulis brothers faced their own trials during Sunday’s main racing blocks. Competing in the MX2 class, Jānis Reišulis recovered from an early crash in his opening heat to fight back from the rear of the second group, eventually crossing the line 20th before securing a stronger 12th-place finish in his subsequent moto. Kārlis Reišulis handled the step up to the high-powered MX1 machinery with a 13th-place result in his first outing and a late-race battle against an American competitor that saw him make a pass on the penultimate lap.

Looking Ahead to the Off-Season

Reflecting on the milestone result, Jonass emphasized the collective effort required by the trio and the backing of the team management. While acknowledging that a brief period of relaxation might be warranted, Jonass stated that rest will have to wait as preparation for the upcoming campaign begins immediately. Testing commitments scheduled for the upcoming Wednesday mean the rider will jump straight back onto the bike before considering any extended time off.
