Kometa Brno secured a 4-3 overtime victory against Sparta Prague at the O2 arena during the 9th round of the Czech Extraliga, while Plzeň defeated České Budějovice 4-1 to climb to fourth place in the league standings.
Robert Leino and Filip Král Deliver Overtime Winner in Prague
Robert Leino scored the decisive goal in extra time off an assist from Filip Král, lifting Kometa Brno past Sparta Prague 4-3 in an early-round marquee matchup. Král finished the evening with three points, including a goal and two assists, while goaltender Aleš Stezka turned away 43 shots to anchor the Brno defense.
The visitors struck first eight minutes into the contest when captain Flek capitalized in the slot following hard work by Zbořil along the boards and a setup from Král at the blue line. Sparta dominated the second period, outshooting Brno 22-6, but struggled to solve Stezka. The visitors extended their lead late in the frame when a defensive mix-up by Sparta allowed Král to beat goaltender Kořenář on a sharp-angle shot.
Sparta responded before the second intermission when Blümel struck on the power play at 39:22, ending Stezka’s shutout bid. The home side fought back late in regulation after falling behind 3-1 following a 47th-minute goal from Brabenec’s rebound. Trailing late, Sparta coach Patrik Augusta pulled Kořenář for an extra skater, leading to a goal by Knot at 57:57. Following a subsequent penalty to Zbořil, Špaček converted a 6-on-4 power play with just 24 seconds remaining to force overtime.
“Podařilo se nám vyrovnat, i když už to asi nikdo ani nečekal, ale pořád je to další prohra. A s tím samozřejmě nejsme spokojené,” remarked Sparta coach Patrik Augusta regarding the late comeback.

The extra session ended quickly when Leino converted on a two-on-one rush. Kometa head coach Libor Zábranský praised his team’s effort. “Myslím, že jsme viděli velice atraktivní utkání. Pro nás bohužel s trošičku nešťastným koncem… Utkání bylo ale velmi kvalitní a jsme samozřejmě šťastní za dva body,” Zábranský stated.
