Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured a second-place finish, but admitted that losing the lead to Max Verstappen after a safety car restart left him frustrated despite acknowledging the maneuver, f1sport.auto.cz reported.
Restart Battles on Slippery Malaysian Tarmac
The race featured a chaotic early phase triggered by Valtteri Bottas crashing out, which forced race control to deploy the safety car. While the front-runners had already transitioned to dry-weather slick tires, the asphalt across the Sepang circuit remained treacherous and lacked optimal grip.
When racing resumed, Antonelli lost the upper hand he had gained off the initial start. Verstappen utilized superior car placement through the opening two corners, exploiting his immediate feel for the cold tyres on the slick surface to dive past the Italian rookie.

“Dnešek byl opravdu dobrou ukázkou toho, jak Max zvládá restart na pneumatikách do sucha a na kluzké trati,” Antonelli said of the duel, as cited by RacingNews365. “Mnohem lépe věděl, kam auto umístit, a v prvních dvou zatáčkách měl lepší cit pro přilnavost. Díky tomu mě předjel.”
Antonelli Extends Championship Lead After Second Place Finish
Antonelli did not hide his initial annoyance at surrendering the top spot, viewing the setback as a harsh yet valuable lesson in racecraft against established world champions. Crossing the line in second place proved crucial for his championship ambitions, especially as teammate George Russell failed to finish due to a power unit failure.
The retirement of Russell allowed Antonelli to extend his points haul over his primary rival by 18 points. On the podium, the 20-year-old stood alongside Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, noting the significance of racing against two definitive figures of modern Formula 1 history.
“Vždy je skvělé mít možnost sdílet trať s takovými jezdci, v tomto případě s Maxem a Lewisem,” Antonelli stated. “Lewis v podstatě psal historii tohoto sportu a Max teď dělá totéž. Já se snažím naučit co nejvíce pokaždé, když mám možnost jet v jejich blízkosti.”
