Franco-Angolan Kevin Kokila made his long-awaited EuroLeague debut on Thursday, October 8, 2026, logging seven minutes of action off the bench for Virtus Bologna in an 87-94 victory over Bayern Munich at the SAP Garden.
The 24-year-old big man stepped onto the continental floor for the first time following a recovery period from a hamstring tear sustained at the end of August. Kokila had been sidelined with a first-degree strain in the right femoral biceps, an injury that kept him out of Virtus Bologna’s opening three fixtures of the EuroLeague campaign.
Recovery and Return at the SAP Garden
Playing in front of 10,374 spectators in Munich, Kokila entered the game as a substitute under head coach Alex Mumbrú, who called upon the player for seven minutes and 24 seconds of playing time. During his time on the court, the former NM1 project gathered two rebounds and recorded one assist without attempting a shot from the field, finishing with an overall performance index rating of one alongside one turnover and one foul.

His sole offensive pass found teammate Kessler Edwards for a clean look, showcasing immediate decision-making despite his recent layoff. Virtus Bologna capitalized on a fast start in Germany, establishing a 35-21 advantage after the opening ten minutes and holding off the hosts through the remainder of the fixture. Wendell Moore paced the Italian side with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Bo Klintman contributed 15 points and Marcus Carr chipped in 13.
From Nationale 1 to European Trophies
Kokila’s arrival at the highest tier of European club basketball marks the latest milestone in a rapid ascent through the ranks of the French and continental game. Exactly five years prior to his EuroLeague debut, on October 8, 2021, the big man was turning out for LyonSO in Nationale 1, narrowly missing a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds against Andrézieux-Bouthéon after having picked up the sport just five years earlier.
Over the subsequent four seasons with JL Bourg-en-Bresse, Kokila evolved from an unheralded third-choice pivot into a team captain and a central figure in the club’s run to the EuroCup title in April, where he averaged 8.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest. Following his departure from Bourg-en-Bresse in the summer, he signed a multi-year contract with Dubai before being loaned to Virtus Bologna for the 2026-27 season.
Kokila Prepares for Lega Debut and EuroLeague Fixtures
With his physical conditioning continuing to progress, Kokila is expected to make his domestic league debut in the Lega away against Venezia over the weekend. The schedule immediately presents another familiar milestone for the player.
Virtus Bologna travels to France next week to face the Paris Basketball team on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at the Adidas Arena—a venue Kokila knows intimately. The Italian club will then return home to host Baskonia Vitoria on Friday, October 16, 2026, at the PalaDozza.
