Kansas City Chiefs Sign Kenneth Walker III to Three-Year Deal
The Kansas City Chiefs secured running back Kenneth Walker III on a three-year, $43 million contract in free agency, a move Stéphane Cadorette reported as a transformative addition to an offense. Since Patrick Mahomes joined the team in 2018, Kansas City rarely prioritized a heavy ground attack, failing to crack the top 16 in rushing yards over an eight-season span. That philosophy held up, but back-to-back drops to 22nd and 25th in rushing over the previous two seasons created an urgent need for stability in the backfield.

Early Returns Validate the Investment
Through the first four games of the season, Walker rushed for 537 yards and added 84 yards through the air, compiling six touchdowns. Stéphane Cadorette noted that despite playing one fewer game than league leader Bijan Robinson—who rushed for 580 yards on 15 more carries—Walker sits firmly in second place across the NFL. His 537-yard opening burst stands as the fourth-highest four-game total since 2000. Operating at 134.3 yards per contest with an average above six yards per carry, Walker joined exclusive historical company, matching early-season thresholds last hit by Emmitt Smith in 1995 and Jim Brown in 1958 and 1963. At his current clip, projections place him on track for 2,282 rushing yards and 2,640 total yards.
Explosive Rushing Metrics Ease Pressure on Mahomes
Defenses must now account for big plays on the ground rather than solely focusing on the passing game. Walker already ripped off six rushes of 20 yards or more, whereas the Chiefs had only produced three such plays the previous season. That persistent threat keeps defensive fronts honest and lowers the defensive burden on Mahomes. Even with that production, Walker plays on a modest contract relative to his output, ranking as the ninth highest-paid running back and the 121st offensive player overall in the league, trailing 19 other free agents who signed richer average-annual deals during the winter window.
