Karşıyaka Basketball sets safety first before play-offs

Karşıyaka Basketball has opened the new Türkiye Sigorta Basketbol Süper Ligi campaign with two home victories as management works through a roughly $1 million debt load, Anadolu Ajansı reported.

Securing Safety After Last Season’s Near-Miss

Following a 53-season unbroken run in Turkey’s top tier, Karşıyaka enters the current campaign determined to avoid the late-season relegation drama that nearly unraveled them last year, Anadolu Ajansı reported. In the previous season’s finale, the İzmir club secured survival by defeating Bursaspor Basketbol 84-82 via a dramatic last-second basket. Despite ongoing financial hurdles, the team has posted two wins from their opening four matches at home, shifting their primary focus to establishing a safe buffer in the standings before targeting the post-season. Managing financial strains while maintaining competitive momentum, the green-and-reds are focusing their two-step plan on guaranteeing league retention first and subsequently joining the play-off race.

President Yiğit Tusder Details Financial Restructuring and Budget Realities

Karşıyaka Sports Club Yiğit Tusder, who took office following a general assembly in June, explained that the club initiated a comprehensive restructuring across all sports branches, as reported by Anadolu Ajansı. Tusder stated that the basketball department carries the heaviest financial burden, beginning the term with approximately $1 million in debt. Management has paid 60 percent of the down payments for past FIBA debts, settled back pay for 13 to 14 players alongside the head coach and assistants, and is working on a payment calendar for remaining foreign player obligations. Tusder emphasized that the team operates on the lowest budget in the Basketbol Süper Ligi, noting that survival remains the paramount objective while maintaining hope for a late push toward the play-offs. Regarding the club’s financial standing, Tusder stated, For now, we have no problems, while adding, We are not used to these days. We are a community accustomed to trophies and success. Football, basketball, and volleyball, it doesn’t matter in any sense. Recalling the emotional toll of previous relegation battles, Tusder noted, We don’t want to experience the situation of ‘relegated, left to the last ball’ like last year and two years ago again, because last season I, my wife, and all of our fans cried.

General Manager Selim Çınar Assesses Roster Chemistry and Roster Adjustments

Karşıyaka Basketball General Manager Selim Çınar highlighted the resilience of a squad built under head coach Nenad Markovic, according to Anadolu Ajansı. Çınar noted that management aimed to build a team that creates excitement rather than fear, and feedback suggests they have achieved this goal. Çınar acknowledged a significant setback during the Galatasaray fixture, where Xavier Munford suffered an unfortunate injury. To offset the loss, the club added a reinforcement capable of contributing in the short term or through the remainder of the season, with management aiming to blend the new arrival into an otherwise cohesive team chemistry.

Next Fixture and Schedule Checkpoint

Karşıyaka continues their Basketbol Süper Ligi campaign, looking to build upon their early home victories and distance themselves from the relegation zone.
