Indonesian para-judoka Junaedi secured the silver medal in the men’s J1 -70kg division at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Monday, October 19.
A Swift Defeat at Aichi Prefectural Budokan
Competing at the Aichi Prefectural Budokan, Junaedi reached the final before falling to China’s Zhu Zhiwen, who claimed the gold medal via an ippon victory in just 45 seconds. The championship bout lasted less than a minute. Zhu set an aggressive pace immediately after the opening bell, scoring a yuko just five seconds into the contest. He built on that advantage by securing a waza-ari at the 33-second mark. Twelve seconds later, Zhu finished the match with an ippon, ending the contest and halting Junaedi’s run at the gold medal.

Dominant Bracket Progression to the Final
Despite the swift defeat in the final, Junaedi’s progression through the tournament bracket showed dominant form. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Uzbekistan’s Ibrokhimjon Akbarov by ippon. He advanced past the semifinal round by defeating India’s Kapil Parmar, also securing victory by ippon.
Successful Transition to the -70kg Division
The silver medal performance marks a notable milestone for Junaedi following his decision to change weight classes. He previously competed in the J1 -60kg division. Facing intense competition in his former weight category, Junaedi opted to move up to the men’s J1 -70kg class. The transition did not hinder his competitiveness against international athletes, as he successfully defeated two opponents in his new division to reach the gold medal match.
Understanding the J1 Classification Standard
In para-judo competition, the J1 category designates events for athletes with severe visual impairments. An ippon functions as the sport’s highest scoring metric, immediately concluding the match and awarding victory to the competitor who executes it successfully. Junaedi’s runner-up finish added a silver medal to the Indonesian delegation’s total at the 2026 Asian Para Games.
