Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. made their preseason debut for the Brooklyn Nets in a 124-90 blowout victory over the Charlotte Hornets, offering the basketball world a first look at an overhauled roster.
Brooklyn Nets Blow Out Charlotte Hornets in Preseason Opener
The Nets routed the Hornets by 34 points at the final buzzer after dominant production from the entire rotation. Brooklyn finished the night converting 44 of their field goal attempts while racking up 31 team assists. Head coach Jordi Fernandez deployed nearly every available player during the first half alone, capitalizing on defensive pressure that forced 25 turnovers from Charlotte.
“For our first match of preseason, we got almost every available player out there and everyone performed well during their minutes,” Fernandez stated, emphasizing the importance of playing hard across all 48 minutes.

Early Chemistry and Drive-and-Kick Sequences Between Randle and Porter
Porter Jr. finished his limited minutes with 16 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor including a 4-of-6 mark from beyond the arc, alongside 5 rebounds. Randle chipped in 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting with 3 assists.
The duo showcased an effective pick-and-roll and drive-and-kick dynamic. Each player routinely drew multiple defenders into the paint before kicking the ball out to open shooters. Fernandez pointed out that the two stars are actively building these on-court habits together, noting that Randle found Porter for a perimeter shot and Porter returned the favor.
“In all aspects of the game, he’s going to just open things up for me,” Porter said of Randle, as reported by SI.com. “I’m excited to play with Julius. A lot of people were curious how we thought that would work playing together. But I think our games complement each other perfectly.”
Contrasting Expectations for Brooklyn in the Eastern Conference
The optimism surrounding the new pairing contrasts sharply with the team’s dismal 20-62 finish to the 2025-26 season, which left Brooklyn 13th in the Eastern Conference.

At the same time, Porter detailed his individual physical preparation for the upcoming campaign. Speaking on the Road Trippin’ Show, the forward noted that he intends to model his conditioning after Stephen Curry to maximize his off-ball movement, acknowledging the heavy burden he carried as a primary offensive focal point last season in Denver where he averaged 24.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.
