German national handball team captain Johannes Golla wants to leave MT Melsungen less than three months after signing a long-term contract, setting off an unexpected departure saga. While the 28-year-old pivot has performed as a key player on the court—helping his club sit in fifth place and compete in the Champions League—his family has struggled to adjust to northern Hesse after spending eight years in Flensburg.
Golla originally made the move in the summer to return closer to his roots in southern Hesse, inking a deal through the summer of 2031. However, his wife and two children, who were born in Flensburg, missed the city, the fjord, and their established social circle. Golla addressed the private adjustment hurdles in late August, noting that his family was starting from zero. Consequently, he asked Melsungen officials to exit his contract early and inquired with his former club, SG Flensburg–Handewitt, about a possible return.
Melsungen Fans Whistle Golla After Transfer Disclosure
The sudden reversal has created immediate fallout for Melsungen, where Golla was intended to be the new face of the team. During a 28:22 home victory against TSV Hannover-Burgdorf in the Kasseler Rothenbach-Halle, the captain faced audible whistles from the home crowd upon the public disclosure of his transfer intentions.
MT-Sportvorstand Jesper Larsson acknowledged that while the club respects the family’s situation, letting a marquee player walk away is complicated. Larsson noted that while finding solutions to exit contracts is always possible in theory, Golla remains bound by a long-term agreement. Talks between Melsungen and Flensburg regarding a potential transfer are already underway, with Melsungen reportedly demanding a transfer fee of at least 1.5 million euros for a move in the summer of 2027.

A Decorated Career on the Move
Before his brief stint in Melsungen, Golla developed into a world-class pivot during his eight-year tenure in Flensburg. With the SG, he secured the German championship in 2019 and triumphed in the European League in 2024 and 2025. On the international stage, the national team captain has earned 121 caps, scoring 419 goals, alongside silver medals at the 2024 Olympics and the European Championship.
