Sale Sharks fullback Joe Carpenter targets an England return ahead of the Premiership clash against Harlequins, crediting a full 10-week pre-season and missing summer international tours for his fast start to the campaign.
According to BBC reporting, Carpenter’s absence from gruelling long-haul Nations Championship trips following previous tours to Japan and New Zealand in 2024, and Argentina and the United States in 2025, allowed him a clear run at summer preparations.
Pre-Season Fitness Drives Form

Missing out on international duty gave the Sale fullback a rare block of uninterrupted conditioning. To actually get a full 10 weeks of pre-season and preparation, getting the body right, was definitely something I needed,
Carpenter said, as reported by the BBC. I think it’s shown in spades really from the games, I feel a lot fitter and a lot stronger.

England coaches challenged the fullback to enhance his backfield decision-making and improve his stamina to cover ground and repeatedly take on tacklers. Carpenter posted high marks in Sale fitness testing when he reported for pre-season duties. Beating defenders is a massive part of my game,
Carpenter added. But that repeatability is massive and something that I’m definitely feeling the benefits of, being able to go again and again and again at speed.
Reflecting on Sale Campaign and Signings

Sale reached the play-offs in each of Carpenter’s first three seasons at the club, but endured a difficult seventh-place finish last term. The team won just five of their 18 league matches, suffered an 85-19 defeat against Saracens in April, and exited the Champions Cup in the last eight against Leinster. Those struggles made his decision to sign a new contract this summer more complicated.

After last season, re-signing was probably a bit tougher than it could potentially be. But after speaking to the coaches, understanding the game model going forward and hearing the signings that are coming in, I think it would have been very silly to leave.

Head coach Alex Sanderson retained the backing of the club alongside a wave of new arrivals. Former England captain Courtney Lawes joined a group of new signings, bolstering a squad that also features experienced internationals Tom Curry and George Ford. That veteran core recently helped spark Sharks to only their second-ever away league victory against Saracens.
Carpenter sits just outside the current England setup but aims to change that evaluation when Sale face Harlequins. I’m just probably outside the mix for England at the moment but having back-to-back performances and playing as well as possible will definitely put me in the best position to hopefully get involved come November,
he said.
