João Matos Launches Biography Celebrating Career in Futsal

João Matos celebrated more than two decades in futsal on Friday by launching his biography, “Capitão João Matos: Liderar, Vencer e Inspirar,” at the FPF Arena inside the Cidade do Futebol. The former Sporting club captain, who stepped away from the court at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, gathered family, friends, teammates, and coaches to mark the release of the volume written by Tiago Guadalupe.

A Two-Decade Journey on the Court

The newly released book traces Matos’s extensive career, capturing his numerous titles while highlighting the deep relationships forged over more than twenty years in the sport. Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) President Pedro Proença authored the introduction, while Sporting club President Frederico Varandas wrote the prefatory notes. National futsal team manager Jorge Braz provided the book’s afterword.

During the launch event, Matos sat on a discussion panel alongside Braz and Sporting coach Nuno Dias. The author described the project as an inspirational narrative rather than a simple athletic ledger. “We made this work interesting and inspirational. More than just mirroring a career, it’s about talking of a young man who went in search of a dream,” Matos stated during the presentation.

Coaches Praise Matos for Leadership and Discipline

Nuno Dias, who managed Matos for 14 years at Sporting, reflected on the defender’s evolution from a young player into a definitive team leader. Dias noted that Matos relied on tactical intelligence, consistency, and discipline rather than flashiness to sustain his career at the highest level. “The João did not arrive as a leader; he learned to be a leader at the expense of others who were before him,” Dias remarked, adding that the player’s rigorous work ethic proved essential to the team’s success.

Jorge Braz, who oversaw Matos during his 213 international appearances for the Portugal national team, emphasized the player’s unifying presence within the locker room. Braz described the national squad as a family unit and credited Matos with anchoring those vital human connections among teammates throughout his tenure.
