Jeremy De León Leads Puerto Rico to Victory Against Cayman Islands in CONCACAF Nations League

Jeremy De León secured a 1-0 victory for Puerto Rico against the Cayman Islands in the CONCACAF Nations League, lifting the boricua squad to nine points in zone A of league B. Sunday’s match was played in Mayagüez, a city located on the west coast of Puerto Rico. For more than an hour, the Cayman Island defense frustrated the hosts at the Estadio Centroamericano de Mayagüez, before a breakthrough finish finally settled the contest.

The Defensive Wall of Deshawn Whitaker

Despite the eventual loss, goalkeeper Deshawn Whitaker of the Scholars International FC stood out as the match’s most prominent figure. The Caymanian keeper acted as a wall against the Puerto Rican ‘Huracán Azul’, turning away ten shots on target. Early in the encounter, Whitaker neutralized a 6th-minute combination between Wilfredo Rivera and De León with a double save. He denied Lazzar Ramos in the 40th minute, and later stopped a 55th-minute penalty kick taken by Puerto Rican captain Leandro Antonetti of the Portuguese club Estrela Amadora. Whitaker blocked yet another shot from Antonetti in the 75th minute.
