Jens Härtel stepped down as U19 coach of 1. FC Union Berlin following an anonymous complaint and a subsequent disciplinary filing by the German Football Association (DFB) control committee regarding discriminatory remarks made during training, welt.de reported.
The Disciplinary Filing and Anonymous Complaints
The DFB control committee petitioned for a multi-week ban against Härtel after receiving an anonymous letter detailing allegations of discriminatory statements made during team sessions at the Bundesliga club. Union Berlin confirmed that no affected individuals filed formal reports through the club’s internal or external reporting channels prior to the anonymous correspondence. In response to the filing, Härtel relinquished his position on Sunday evening after serving in the role since July 1, as noted by freiepresse.de.
Härtel issued a public apology regarding the incident. I made mistakes and did not live up to my role model function in the youth sector, for which I have apologized to my team as well as the coaching and support staff and would like to do so to the entire club as well,
the 57-year-old said in a club statement reported by welt.de. He added that it was never his intention to verbally hurt or discriminate against anyone, noting his decision to step away from coaching indefinitely to reflect on his behavior and seek professional support.
Union Berlin Internal Review and Preventive Measures
Following the receipt of the anonymous letter, Union Berlin initiated an internal review process utilizing external expert assistance. According to club assessments, players were not subjected to physical endangerment at any point during the training sessions. Lutz Munack, managing director for youth and amateur football and a member of the club’s presidium, addressed the situation by stating that Härtel’s conduct warranted disciplinary action. Jens Härtel behaved wrongly and has been sanctioned by us. We respect his step and have agreed on a time-out with him,
Munack said, as reported by welt.de.
Munack also noted that Härtel showed a genuine commitment to addressing the matter over the preceding weeks, and the relationship with the team remained intact. Moving forward, Union Berlin confirmed that preventive training against discriminatory behavior and verbal infractions—even those occurring unintentionally—will become a mandatory component of coach education programs at the club. The organization also reiterated its commitment to supporting youth players and encouraging them to report any inappropriate treatment.
Bundesliga Relief and First Team Victory
While the youth academy addressed the coaching departure, the Union Berlin senior squad secured a critical result in the Bundesliga. Head coach Mauro Lustrinelli experienced a measure of relief after his side secured their first league victory of the campaign on the fifth matchday. A late strike from Livan Burcu in the 81st minute lifted the Köpenicker to a 1-0 win against newly promoted SV Elversberg in front of 22,012 spectators at the sold-out Stadion An der Alten Försterei. The victory prevented the club from sliding to the bottom of the league standings.
