The NTT IndyCar Series will return to Europe for the first time since 2007 and hold its first race outside North America since 2013, launching a 10-year agreement to race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya from July 16 to 18, 2027. Five-time IndyCar champion Álex Palou pushed executives on both sides of the Atlantic to finalize the deal, arguing that the Montmeló facility offers infrastructure that rivals premier venues in the United States.
Bringing IndyCar Back to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
Announced during an official presentation at the circuit auditorium, the INDYCAR Grand Prix of Barcelona marks a significant international expansion for the American open-wheel championship. Fira Circuit and Penske Entertainment signed the multi-year accord with support from the Generalitat de Catalunya. Pau Relat, president of Fira Circuit, noted during the presentation that the 10-year partnership aims to connect the series with new markets and audiences in Europe and North America.
For Palou, who grew up roughly 15 to 20 minutes from the circuit in Sant Antoni de Vilamajor, the agreement represents a homecoming. El Periódico reported that the Catalan driver admitted he initially thought bringing the championship to Barcelona by 2027 was impossible. After securing his fifth IndyCar title and his fourth championship, Palou used his standing within the paddock to lobby series owner Roger Penske and circuit officials directly.

Infrastructure Praise and Comparisons to American Ovals
Palou contrasted the European venue with counterparts in the United States, pointing out that while Indianapolis Motor Speedway boasts legendary facilities for the Indianapolis 500, few road courses in North America match the modern standard set in Montmeló. El Confidencial reported that the event will introduce the championship back to European soil following its last continental appearance at Assen in the Netherlands in 2007.
Overcoming Past Career Hardships in European Racing
The 2027 race will also mark Palou’s first competitive return to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya since his difficult 2016 campaign in GP3, where he shared the grid with future Formula 1 drivers such as Charles Leclerc, Alexander Albon, and Nyck de Vries. El Periódico noted that Palou recalled that season as the lowest point of his professional career, a time when limited financial opportunities and stalled prospects in Europe nearly forced him out of the sport entirely.

Faced with a dead end in Europe, Palou accepted a career lifeline in Japan at the turn of the year before eventually breaking through in American open-wheel racing. Reflecting on those struggles during the circuit presentation, he acknowledged that he genuinely feared his career as a professional driver was over before finding a path forward in Asia and subsequently joining Chip Ganassi Racing in the United States.
IndyCar Race Weekend Scheduled for July 2027
The newly minted race weekend is scheduled for July 16–18, 2027, positioning itself as a summer showcase on the calendar. Generalitat President Salvador Illa and IndyCar CEO Mark Miles joined Pau Relat and Miquel Sàmper, Minister of Business and Labour, to close the introductory press conference at the track. Officials from both organizations framed the decade-long commitment as a cornerstone for boosting international tourism and reinforcing the circuit’s diversified motorsport portfolio.
