Iivo Niskanen Missed Summer Training After Skin Cancer Diagnosis

Finnish cross-country skiing star Iivo Niskanen missed the national team’s summer training camps and will sit out the upcoming media day after being diagnosed with an early stage of skin cancer on his foot, according to reports in Swedish and Finnish media.

The Diagnosis and Treatment on the Foot

The 34-year-old athlete discovered a skin lesion on his foot in May and subsequently sought medical evaluation. A dermatologist recommended removing the spot, leading to a diagnosis of an acral melanoma in situ. This classification indicates the earliest developmental stage of skin cancer, which had not spread beyond the outermost layer of the skin. Niskanen underwent two successful surgeries to excise the affected area.

Because the incision was located on his foot—the primary tool of his trade—the procedures required significant adjustments to his training load. The rehabilitation and recovery timeline kept him away from the Finnish national team’s collective training camps during the summer months, a period when the squad had otherwise emphasized group preparation.

Support From the Coaching Staff

While the Finnish cross-country skiing team pursued a more centralized training model for the upcoming season, Niskanen trained independently at home under modified conditions. During this period, he coordinated closely with the coaching staff. He publicly expressed gratitude to Swedish head coach Joakim Abrahamsson for assistance in optimizing his home-based training regimen while he managed his recovery.

The Finnish ski federation confirmed that Niskanen’s health status is currently under control following the operations.

Stress and Relief Over Early Detection

Reflecting on the diagnosis, Niskanen acknowledged the psychological toll of the screening process. Waiting for test results proved stressful, but he emphasized relief at having acted promptly. Alongside his recovery and recent birth of his third child, the three-time Olympic champion noted that he is now able to resume a normal lifestyle and standard professional routines.

Return to World Cup Competition

Niskanen is scheduled to rejoin the national team fold in November at training facilities in Olos. His return precedes the official World Cup season opener, which traditionally takes place in Ruka, Finland, at the end of November.
