Iga Światek enters the Wuhan Open semifinals on a collision course with the Race to the WTA Finals standings, needing a strong finish in China to unseat Karolína Muchová from the final qualifying position. The six-time Grand Slam champion advanced to the final four on the hard courts of Wuhan by defeating American Ann Li 6–4, 6–1 in the quarterfinals. Światek faces compatriot Maja Chwalińska in the semifinals, with the winner moving one step closer to the title match at the WTA 1000 tournament.
The Race Standings and Muchová’s Vulnerability
Muchová currently holds the final qualification spot for the season-ending WTA Finals, but her lead has shrunk significantly as Światek mounts a late-season charge. Światek has already eaten into the Czech player’s advantage, leaving the gap at 546 points. If Światek wins her semifinal match against Chwalińska, that deficit will narrow to just 286 points. A tournament victory in Wuhan would vault the Polish star past Muchová in the Race standings.
Path to the Semifinals in Wuhan
Światek navigated her quarterfinal test against Li despite a tense final game in the opening set where she saved three break points before converting her first set-point opportunity. Światek defeated Magdalena Frech and Ashlyn Krueger to reach the quarterfinals. On the other side of the draw, Chwalińska reached the semifinals by overcoming Maria Sakkari 6–0, 3–6, 7–5. The meeting between Światek and Chwalińska marks the first all-Polish semifinal of a WTA tournament in the open era.
Contasting Semifinalists on the Other Side
The tournament’s second semifinal pairs Jeļena Ostapenko against Sonay Kartal. Ostapenko engineered a quarterfinal victory against the eleventh seed Diana Shnaider, 7–6, 6–1. Kartal continued her tournament run by eliminating the fifth seed Elina Svitolina 6–2, 2–6, 6–4. The match is scheduled for 11:00 CEST.

Doubles Action and Czech Representation
Beyond the singles battle for qualification, Czech representation remains active in the Wuhan Open doubles draw. Kateřina Siniaková and Australian partner Storm Hunter defeated Guo Hanyu and Kristina Mladenovic 6–4, 2–6, 10–1 in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals. Siniaková is chasing her 40th career WTA doubles title and will face Olympic champions Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini next. Meanwhile, Linda Nosková has already secured her singles berth for the year-end championships in the United States, alongside Siniaková who will compete in doubles with Taylor Townsend.
