Huila student-athletes compete in El Espinal for national finals berths

More than 120 student-athletes from Huila are competing in El Espinal, Tolima, to secure their berths for the upcoming National Finals of the 2026 Juegos Intercolegiados, Diario del Huila reported. The regional qualifying event, known as the Zonal Regional Centro Sur, runs from October 21 through October 26, 2026, bringing together pre-juvenile competitors from departments across Colombia’s southern region.

The Regional Clash in El Espinal

Delegates from Huila face stiff competition against squads from Cundinamarca, Putumayo, Tolima, and Caquetá as the tournament unfolds in the Tolima municipality. According to coverage from Nación Huilense, the regional phase serves as the definitive hurdle for team sports seeking entry into the national showcase scheduled for Bogotá.

The stakes extend beyond national competition. Standout performers competing in El Espinal also keep alive their aspirations of advancing toward international school sports stages, specifically the South American phase slated for Quito, Ecuador, as detailed by La Última.

Team Sports Seek Single-Qualifier Berths

Unlike individual disciplines, team sports must follow a strict regional elimination format where only the tournament champion claims the sole available berth for the national finals. Huila’s representation spans multiple educational institutions across various municipalities:

  • Men’s Soccer: Institución Educativa Eugenio Ferro Falla from Campoalegre.
  • Women’s Soccer: Institución Educativa José Acevedo y Gómez from Acevedo.
  • Men’s Futsal: Institución Educativa Elisa Borrero de Pastrana from La Argentina.
  • Women’s Futsal & Volleyball: Colegio Piaget from Neiva.
  • Men’s Volleyball: Institución Educativa Jesús María Aguirre from Aipe.
  • Basketball 3×3: Institución Educativa Misael Pastrana Borrero from Rivera (men’s) and Colegio Anglo from Neiva (women’s).
  • Conventional Basketball: Colegio Piaget represents Huila in both male and female divisions.

Individual Disciplines Rely on Departmental Filters

Away from the team brackets, Huila’s individual athletes follow a distinct qualification pathway. Diario del Huila reported that competitors in sports such as boxing, karate, judo, swimming, para-swimming, athletics, para-athletics, cycling, chess, table tennis, and badminton do not participate in zonal playoffs against other departments.

Instead, advancement depends on a thorough evaluation of results achieved during the departmental finals, filtered strictly through the specific quotas allocated by the Ministry of Sport. Because quotas are capped per discipline, securing a departmental victory does not guarantee an automatic ticket to Bogotá; athletes must post marks, times, or scores high enough to clear the national ministry's allocation limits.

The Road Ahead to Bogotá

As competition at the Zonal Regional Centro Sur continues through October 26, student-athletes and coaching staffs await final validations from sports authorities regarding who successfully converted their regional efforts into national qualification. The final delegation lists will confirm which individual standouts and team champions carry Huila’s colors into the ultimate phase of the school sports calendar.
