Holger Rune ended a 373-day wait for a victory on the ATP Tour on Monday, overcoming France’s Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5) in the opening round of the ATP 500 de Basilea. The grueling match lasted between two hours and 39 minutes and two hours and 40 minutes at St. Jakobshalle, marking a key point in the former world number four's comeback from a severe Achilles tendon injury.
Rune Weathers Halys' 32 Aces to Win
Halys relied heavily on a punishing first serve throughout the contest, firing 32 aces past the Danish player. The French server kept the pressure high in the deciding third set, though he faltered just enough in a single service game to concede two break points. Rune managed to weather the barrage by maintaining cleaner movement during baseline exchanges.

After splitting the first two sets—Rune claiming the opener 6-4 via a break in the seventh game, and Halys dominating the second-set tiebreak 7-2—the match hinged on a tense final tiebreak. Rune built a 5-1 lead in the decisive breaker before Halys rattled off four consecutive points to level at 5-5. A double fault from the Frenchman handed Rune a match point, which the Dane converted with a cleanly executed drop shot.
Eleven Months Away From the Tour
Prior to Monday, Rune’s last victory on the ATP tour came on October 17, 2025, when he defeated Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 de Estocolmo. Shortly after that run, the Danish competitor suffered an Achilles tendon injury that sidelined him for eleven months. While he secured two wins for Denmark in a Davis Cup tie against Bulgaria in September, subsequent opening-round exits in Tokyo and Shanghai had extended his winless streak in ATP competition to over a year.

The Basel tournament represents Rune’s fourth ATP event since returning to the tour. The venue holds history for the Dane, who reached the Basel final in 2022 before following up with semifinal appearances in both 2023 and 2024.
Upcoming Second-Round Match in Switzerland
With his opening-round victory secured, Rune advances to the round of 16 at the ATP 500 event in Switzerland. He will face the winner of the first-round fixture between Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz and Belgium’s Zizou Bergs.
