Former Argentina national basketball team star Hernán Montenegro was officially declared an honorary guest in La Plata following a public talk detailing his recovery from substance abuse. The municipal recognition highlights both his athletic achievements and his current advocacy work across the country.
La Plata City Council Confers Honorary Status
Marcelo Galland, president of the La Plata City Council, formally bestowed the “huésped de honor” designation upon Montenegro during his visit to the city. The recognition came in the wake of Montenegro’s public presentation titled “De la adicción a la acción” (“From Addiction to Action”), which was hosted by the local municipal government inside the municipal building’s Golden Hall.
Galland shared a statement regarding the visit, which Montenegro shared on his Instagram account. “There are life stories that reflect the importance of neighborhood clubs, and Hernán’s is one of them,” Galland wrote, noting the athlete’s community roots.
Athletic Career Roots in Bahía Blanca
Montenegro began his basketball journey at Club Leandro N. Alem in Bahía Blanca before rising to national and international prominence. During his career, he represented the Argentina national basketball team and earned distinction as one of the first Argentine players selected in the NBA draft.
Reflecting on that trajectory, Galland emphasized the broader impact of Montenegro’s athletic background. “Taking his first steps at Club Leandro N. Alem in Bahía Blanca, he was one of the first Argentines chosen in the NBA Draft, wore the national team jersey, and became an undisputed figure in national and international basketball,” Galland stated.

Montenegro Speaks About Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Following a period of clinical treatment and personal recovery, Montenegro travels throughout Argentina to speak about substance abuse and mental health. During his address in La Plata, he detailed his experiences with addiction, the consequences it brought to his personal life, and the ongoing decision-making process required to maintain sobriety.
City officials highlighted that Montenegro’s current public appearances target younger audiences specifically to address resilience, teamwork, and personal overcoming. “His story doesn’t end on the court,” Galland added. “He also went through difficult moments that he managed to transform into experience and into a message that he shares today, especially with the youth.”
