Harry Kane equaled Peter Shilton’s 36-year-old England appearance record by winning his 125th cap in a 3-0 Nations League victory over the Czech Republic at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday night. Manager Thomas Tuchel substituted the captain in the 82nd minute to a standing ovation from more than 75,000 fans, while stadium monitors displayed the milestone number 125 in gold lettering.
Wembley Stadium Salutes a Historic Equalizer
Few supporters left their seats early as England cruised toward a 3-0 victory against the Czech Republic. Tuchel saved his final substitution specifically for his captain, withdrawing Kane in the 82nd minute so the Wembley crowd could honor the milestone. Gold lettering flashed across the stadium scoreboards to mark his 125th appearance for the Three Lions, 106 of which have come with the armband.
Kane equaled the legendary goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who held the previous record for 36 years following his international retirement after the 1990 World Cup. “It is an extraordinary privilege and exceeds my wildest expectations,” Kane said afterward.
Peter Shilton and Thomas Tuchel Praise the Captain
Peter Shilton, 77, recorded a video message congratulating Kane and predicted the 33-year-old striker would eventually reach unbreakable milestones. Shilton noted in his message that he might have played significantly more matches had he not shared goalkeeping duties with Ray Clemence between 1972 and 1983.

Tuchel praised his striker’s influence ahead of kickoff, recalling how he used to imitate Shilton in goal as a child and expressing hope that younger generations will view Kane with the same reverence. Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, who has earned 60 caps at age 23, called Kane “the best player that has ever worn this shirt.”
Decisive Contributions on the Pitch
Kane marked his milestone night by scoring twice and forcing an own goal. In the 27th minute, his sharp cross toward the goalmouth prompted Czech defender Vladimir Coufal to turn the ball into his own net. Kane added a second-half brace, steering home a right-footed cross from close range in the 40th minute before heading in a corner kick in the 57th minute.
The performance kept England on track in the Nations League group stage, recording their third win in four matches. Kane logged heavy minutes across the international window—registering 83, 71, 70, and 81 minutes respectively—and joked afterward that he would gladly have stayed on the pitch longer to add to his 91 international goals.
From Early Rejection to National Leadership
Kane’s path to the national team record book required overcoming early setbacks, including being released by Arsenal at age nine. After joining Tottenham and enduring several lower-league loan spells, he broke into senior football under challenging circumstances. His international career began with the disappointing exit against Iceland at Euro 2016 before Gareth Southgate took charge and built a resilient squad culture around Kane’s diligent work ethic.
Anthony Barry, Tuchel’s assistant coach, noted that a player of Kane’s fame rarely remains so uncomplicated and free of ego, always willing to perform the unheralded defensive work.
Kane Seeks World Cup Title Despite Club Success
Public affection for Kane grew steadily alongside both team achievements and shared disappointments in major finals. After moving to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, Kane secured two German league titles and one DFB-Pokal trophy. Having missed out on scoring in the European Championship finals of 2021 and 2024 as well as World Cup semifinal defeats, Kane acknowledged he would trade all individual milestones for a World Cup title with England.
