Former BG Göttingen center Harper Kamp has rejoined the club as an assistant coach for the BARMER 2. Basketball Bundesliga ProA season, supporting head coach Martins Gulbis, the club announced on Oct. 14, 2026.
Kamp Returns to the Bench After a Two-Year Hiatus
Kamp stepped away from professional basketball in the summer of 2024 following the conclusion of his playing career. Now 38, the former fan favorite has integrated directly into the coaching staff and has been visible on the sidelines alongside Gulbis during ProA fixtures.
BG Göttingen Managing Director Frank Meinertshagen welcomed the addition, noting that Kamp’s high basketball IQ and extensive floor experience naturally translate to coaching. Meinertshagen emphasized the value of keeping club stalwarts involved in the organization.
Gulbis outlined a specific developmental mandate for the new assistant. According to the head coach, Kamp will focus heavily on player development, particularly working with frontcourt players on interior scoring, while also overseeing opponent video scouting.
A Storied Legacy in Göttingen
Kamp arrived in Germany in the summer of 2013 when then-head coach Johan Roijakkers brought the American-born forward into the club’s second-tier squad. Kamp earned ProA Player of the Year honors and helped drive the club’s promotion to the easyCredit BBL in 2014.

Over multiple stints with the Veilchen, Kamp established himself as a fixture in Lower Saxony. Records show he holds club benchmarks for a Göttingen player in the top division, accumulating 1,630 points, 645 rebounds, and 129 starts.
Following a brief stint with MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg in the summer of 2015, Kamp returned to Göttingen for his third season. Spells with the Eisbären Bremerhaven in 2016 and a short-term emergency return to Göttingen in November 2017—triggered by an injury to Darius Carter—preceded a brief stop in Uruguay with Malvin Montevideo in March 2018.
Overcoming Injury and Transitioning to Coaching
Kamp returned to the club as a training player in the summer of 2020 under head coach Roel Moors, eventually earning another spot on the top-flight roster. His final active campaign came during the 2022-23 season, which marked one of the club’s most successful runs since returning to the top tier.
During that season, Kamp posted 26 points against Brose Bamberg in December 2022 before eclipsing that mark with 29 points against the MLP Academics Heidelberg at the Lokhalle in February 2023. His playing career ended following a severe knee injury sustained on May 18, 2023, during the second game of the playoff quarterfinals against FC Bayern Munich. Despite extensive rehabilitation, subsequent surgery ruled out a return to professional play.
Having acquired German citizenship in 2021, Kamp expressed gratitude for the opportunity to embark on his coaching career alongside familiar faces in a city where his family has deep roots.

With Kamp fully integrated into the technical staff, BG Göttingen continues its ProA regular-season campaign. The club has not yet announced specific adjustments to the training schedule surrounding upcoming league fixtures.
