Guardians Beat White Sox 9-3 to Force Game 4 in ALDS

The Chicago White Sox missed their first chance to clinch the American League Division Series at Rate Field on October 7, 2026, falling 9-3 to the Cleveland Guardians. Despite the Game 3 loss, the White Sox maintain a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five postseason matchup ahead of Game 4.

Cleveland Offense Forces Game 4 in Chicago

The Chicago White Sox expected to clinch the series before 40,590 fans at Rate Field for the franchise’s first home playoff game since 2021, but the Cleveland Guardians instead forced a fourth game. The opening frames offered the start the South Side faithful wanted.

That early advantage evaporated in the third inning. Relief pitchers Bryan Hudson and Hagen Smith combined to walk three batters, culminating in a bases-clearing triple down the right-field line by Jo Adell. The hit gave the Guardians a 4-1 lead they would never relinquish.

It felt like a big, deep breath that we were able to take, left fielder Steven Kwan said postgame via Yahoo Sports.

Ten different Guardians recorded a hit and/or scored a run, a sharp contrast to the first two games where the offense managed just three runs and seven hits combined. Cleveland batters contributed 11 hits total, with Adell, José Ramírez, Patrick Bailey, and Brayan Rocchio each collecting two.

Cleveland Pitchers Set Postseason Strikeout Record

Cleveland pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts, setting a postseason record for a nine-inning contest, according to reports from MLB. White Sox pitchers struggled to find the strike zone, issuing 10 walks over the course of the afternoon.

In the fifth, José Ramírez doubled, stole third, and beat the throw home on a fielder’s choice to restore a three-run advantage for Cleveland.

Ramírez Leads Late Surge to Seal Victory

Cleveland added two more insurance runs in the ninth as Angel Genao and Brayan Rocchio got in on the offensive action with an RBI each before closing out the 9-3 final score.

“I don’t think anybody’s surprised. That’s just what he does and what he can do at all times.”

Ramírez played through the aftermath of a hamate bone fracture sustained in June. The victory trimmed Chicago’s series lead to 2-1, forcing Game 4 back at Rate Field.

White Sox Seek ALCS Berth in Game 4

The White Sox hold a 2-1 edge as they prepare to host Game 4. The team previously went 60-102 the previous season.

A Guardians win would force a decisive Game 5 at Progressive Field on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. CT.
