Peruvian Tennis Left Without Representation in Cali After Round of 16 Exits
Peruvian tennis lost its final singles competitors at the 2026 Challenger de Cali in Colombia when Gonzalo Bueno and Juan Pablo Varillas were both eliminated in the round of 16 on red clay. Bueno fell to Argentina’s Santiago Rodríguez Taverna in a three-set battle interrupted by rain, while Varillas dropped a tight straight-set decision to top-seeded Brazilian Gustavo Heide.
Rain Delays and Decisive Breaks Seal Gonzalo Bueno’s Exit Against Rodríguez Taverna
Gonzalo Bueno entered the tournament as the seventh seed and opened his week by overcoming Argentina’s Hernán Casanova. His second-round clash with Santiago Rodríguez Taverna stretched across two days due to weather delays in Cali. Bueno claimed a grueling opening set in a long tie-break after recovering from an early service break and converting his fifth opportunity.
The momentum shifted in the second set as Rodríguez Taverna broke for a 3-1 lead. Both players struggled with consistency behind their serves, combining for nine double faults through the first two sets. After trading breaks and utilizing drop shots, the Argentine qualifier secured a late break to level the match. When play resumed following a rain delay in the third set, Rodríguez Taverna broke twice more to complete the comeback and eliminate the Peruvian seventh seed.
Juan Pablo Varillas Falls Fighting Against Top Seed Gustavo Heide
Juan Pablo Varillas bowed out after a demanding contest against tournament favorite Gustavo Heide, currently ranked No. 114 in the ATP rankings. The 30-year-old Lima native went toe-to-toe from the baseline with the Brazilian top seed for one hour and 43 minutes before falling 7-5, 6-4. Varillas disposed of three break points, but could not concretize any of them.

The decisive moments arrived late in both sets. Heide broke serve in the closing games of the opening set before holding to take the lead. The second set followed an identical pattern, remaining level until 4-4, when Heide broke Varillas’s serve once more and served out the match to secure his place in the quarterfinals.
Rankings Impact and Next Tournaments for the Peruvian Duo
The second-round defeat earned Varillas three ranking points, lifting him provisionally four spots to No. 200 in the live ATP rankings. His permanent standing inside the top 200 will depend on results from competing players elsewhere. Varillas will next travel to Ecuador to compete in the Challenger 75 Ciudad de Guayaquil. Meanwhile, Bueno concluded his week in Colombia having successfully snapped a month-long drought with his opening-round victory and adding valuable competitive reps on clay.
