Union Bordeaux-Bègles and Gloucester played to a thrilling 36-36 draw in their opening match of the Champions Cup at Kingsholm Stadium on Friday, bringing an end to the French side’s 16-game winning streak in the competition.
Kingsholm Stadium Thriller Ends Level
The Friday fixture delivered ten tries in a breathless encounter that kept both sides within touching distance of one another throughout the afternoon. Under tournament regulations applied this season, both teams walked away with two points apiece. The result leaves Bordeaux-Bègles matched with La Rochelle’s historical tournament benchmark of 16 victories between 2021 and 2023, as Yannick Bru’s squad failed to secure the outright record on English soil.
Administrative Hurdles Precede Matchday Chaos
Preparation for the visitors was far from straightforward after travel disruptions hit the squad ahead of kickoff. Four players—including winger Louis Bielle-Biarrey—alongside a member of the technical staff were detained at nearby Bristol Airport for several hours on Thursday due to administrative reasons before officials cleared them later that evening. Despite the disruption, the visitors started brightly at Kingsholm.

Try Scoring Festivity Highlights First Half
Martin Page-Relo opened the scoring for the visitors inside four minutes after darting down the blindside to finish a well-executed move. Gloucester hit back through Arthur Clark following a driving lineout before Max Llewellyn crossed over after a Bordeaux-Bègles scrum malfunctioned. Sipili Falatea restored parity for the visitors with a powerful close-range carry following Thomas Willis’s surge. Indiscipline and scrum struggles then plagued the French outfit, allowing George Barton to kick Gloucester into a 24-17 half-time lead.

Second-Half Lead Swings and Final Deadlock
Bordeaux-Bègles seized momentum immediately after the interval through Pablo Uberti’s corner finish and a subsequent try from Louis Bielle-Biarrey, taking a 29-24 advantage. Gloucester replied through replacement Will Trenholm, whose quickfire double pushed the English hosts ahead 36-29 entering the final quarter. The visitors refused to yield, however, as captain Maxime Lucu sliced through the midfield before putting Bielle-Biarrey away for his second try of the afternoon between the posts. Lucu converted to tie the match at 36-36, and despite late territorial pressure from the Cherry and Whites, the score remained level until referee Gianluca Gnecchi blew the final whistle.
