Giovanna Scoccimarro Wins Bronze at Judo World Championships in Baku

German judoka Giovanna Scoccimarro secured the bronze medal in the under-70 kilogram division at the world championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, earning her country’s first podium finish of the tournament on the fifth day of competition.

Bronze Medal Victory Over Nauana Silva

Scoccimarro claimed her medal by defeating Brazil’s Nauana Silva in the bronze-medal match, securing victory via a yuko score. The 28-year-old athlete from Lower Saxony reached the podium following a demanding path through the tournament brackets. She notched three victories to advance to the semifinals, where she fell to Austria’s Michaela Polleres before rebounding in the small final. Scoccimarro expressed her disbelief and joy following the win, stating she was so happy she could hardly believe it.

Scoccimarro Achieves Career Milestone While Teammates Miss Medals

The result marks the most significant achievement of Scoccimarro’s career after she captured a silver medal at the 2023 World Championships in Doha. While Scoccimarro broke through to the podium, other members of the German delegation faced difficult exits in Baku. Twin sisters Mascha and Seija Ballhaus both narrowly missed out on medals earlier in the tournament, finishing fifth in their respective weight classes.

Exits for Eduard Trippel and Miriam Butkereit

Additional members of the German team were unable to advance to the medal rounds on Thursday. Eduard Trippel, competing in the under-90 kg category, lost his second match to Uzbekistan’s Nurbek Murtozoew by ippon. Miriam Butkereit, who earned a silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, missed out on the pool final after dropping her match against Serbia’s Aleksandra Andric.
