The Archers gestois in Gesté hosted the first national indoor archery selection event on October 11. The gathering at the local sports hall featured 16 young archers competing in 7, 10, and 18-meter shots in the morning, followed by 46 adults targeting 18 and 25 meters in the afternoon. Eight clubs from Loire-Atlantique, including Bouaye, Nantes, Herbignac, and Montoir-de-Bretagne, participated in the event, which marked the start of a four-round selection process for the Puy-de-Dôme Nationals.
The Gesté Archers, a Maine-et-Loire-based club affiliated with the Ufolep (Union française des œuvres laïques d’éducation physique), have emphasized a socially oriented approach to archery since 2014. The club’s focus includes promoting sports health, accessibility for individuals with disabilities, and sustainable practices. With 38 members, including 15 young archers of more than 8 years old, the club operates under the responsibility of Xavier Grimaud.
Social Mission of the Gesté Archers
The Gesté Archers’ model reflects broader trends in French sports clubs prioritizing inclusivity and societal impact. By adhering to Ufolep’s principles, the club integrates physical education with values like solidarity and environmental responsibility. The club’s structure—dividing participants into youth and adult categories—supports this mission, fostering intergenerational participation and skill development.
During the October 11 event, the club’s sports hall became a hub for regional archery talent. The morning session for young archers involved shorter-distance targets, while the afternoon’s adult competition required precision at longer ranges. This format ensures that participants are tested across varying skill levels.
Event Structure and Participation
The selection process follows a seasonal schedule: two indoor rounds in winter and two outdoor rounds in spring. The October 11 event was the first of four qualifying stages, with results determining who advances to the Puy-de-Dôme Nationals. Last year’s event saw Antonin Girardeau finish third among 17–25 age group.
Regional Collaboration and Future Goals
By hosting the selection in Gesté, the Gesté Archers demonstrated their role as a regional anchor for archery development. “This event isn’t just about competition—it’s about building a network of clubs that share our values.”
The upcoming selection rounds, scheduled for January and March , will determine the final qualifiers for the Puy-de-Dôme Nationals, where the best regional archers will compete for national recognition.
The Gesté Archers’ participation in the national selection process demonstrates their significance in French archery. By blending athletic excellence with social responsibility, the club has positioned itself as a model for similar organizations.
