Genesio Laments OM Defeat After Europa League Loss to Olympiakos

OM Defeat Against Olympiakos Leaves Bruno Genesio Searching for Answers

Olympique de Marseille head coach Bruno Genesio stated that his side did not deserve to lose 1-0 to Olympiakos at the Stade Vélodrome during the second matchday of the UEFA Europa League, maintaining that a draw would have been the fair result. The defeat marked Marseille’s second loss in two matchdays of the UEFA Europa League, deepening the club’s European struggles.

Match Statistics and Tactical Shortcomings

Marseille registered more than 30 touches inside the Olympiakos penalty area. Despite the territorial dominance, the hosts lacked clinical finishing and were undone by a set-piece vulnerability that Genesio noted has become a recurring issue.

“We play a rather coherent, rather controlled match,” Genesio said after the fixture. “But there are unconverted chances and a weakness on set pieces that costs us dearly. It repeats itself, so that means we still have a lot of work to do.”

Contrast With Domestic Form and Confidence Crisis

The European setback arrives just days after Marseille secured a victory away against Troyes in Ligue 1 on Sunday. Genesio contrasted the two performances, admitting that while his team played worse against Troyes, the domestic win masked underlying issues.

“We know that only victory counts,” Genesio explained. “Sunday in Troyes, we were less good than tonight, but we left with the victory and that allows us to forget a lot of things. We would have liked to string them together, that’s not the case.”

Addressing the offensive struggles, Genesio pointed to a growing psychological barrier among his forwards. “We work in training, we do exercises in front of goal… But there is the confidence parameter. Right now, we see the goal as very small. We don’t have too much success, not much going for us either. We make bad choices, there is a lack of spontaneity.”

Rebound Opportunity at Angers

Marseille must quickly shift focus back to domestic commitments as they prepare to face Angers on Sunday. Genesio emphasized that correcting the team’s offensive efficiency and ruthless execution in the final third remains the primary objective ahead of the weekend fixture.
