Former world No. 6 Gaël Monfils has stepped away from professional tennis without a public farewell, appearing on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s official list of retired players since October 5, 2026.
A Quiet Exit Discovered by Journalists
The update surfaced through journalists tracking player statuses rather than a traditional announcement from the player or his management team. French journalists first noticed that his name appeared on the roster of inactive athletes.
The status change carries immediate professional consequences. Monfils can no longer compete in official ATP Tour events unless he formally requests reinstatement. He would also need to submit to a mandatory six-month testing pool for anti-doping compliance before returning to competition, a protocol previously followed by players such as Serena Williams. In certain cases, players entered on the retirement list have subsequently requested their return to the circle of active sports people.
ITIA Confirmation and Anti-Doping Protocols
ITIA communications official Adrian Bassett confirmed the retirement status to the publication L’Équipe. Bassett noted that the organization tracks active player statuses in connection with anti-doping and match-fixing prevention regulations.
Monfils had previously stated that the 2026 season would mark his final year on the professional circuit. He had intended to conclude his career following appearances in Lyon, Vienna, and Paris.
Missed Farewells and Abrupt Schedule Changes
His placement on the ITIA inactive list abruptly alters that schedule, removing him from the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Paris. Alexandra Dulgheru was also placed on the same list this season, officially considered retired by the ITIA since June 29, 2026, though she had not played since 2021.
The retirement confirmation follows Monfils’ second-round singles defeat to American player Learner Tien at the US Open on September 3, 2026. During the same Grand Slam tournament, Monfils put on a major show in the mixed doubles draw alongside his wife, Elina Svitolina, before exiting the tournament without capturing a Grand Slam title in that short-format event. That early-September appearance in New York now stands as the final professional match of his lengthy career.
Exhibition Withdrawal Left Supporters Without Closure
Plans for a farewell exhibition event in the week of the ATP Tour 250 tournament in Lyon alongside fellow French tennis figures Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon, and Richard Gasquet were also scrapped. Tournament organizers in Lyon announced that Monfils withdrew from the exhibition event citing personal reasons.

With no statements issued by Monfils’ camp regarding the sudden shift in status or the withdrawal from the exhibition, the abrupt conclusion to his career has left supporters without the planned indoor farewell in Paris.
