Tom Gabarró Earns Spot in Elite NFL Academy Following Rigorous International Scouting Process
Tom Gabarró, a 2007-born defensive back and wide receiver from Barcelona, has secured a position within the elite NFL Academy operating at Loughborough College in the United Kingdom. Out of nearly 5,000 applicants evaluated globally from 22 countries, Gabarró was selected as one of 65 participants in the international developmental program designed to combine high-level athletic training with academic studies.

The program acts as a major developmental pipeline for American college football, with 40 former academy players currently rostered at collegiate programs, including 27 at the Division I level. Describing the setup as “La Masia of the NFL,” Gabarró balances a demanding schedule that spans from early morning departures to evening returns, noting the essential role of athletic discipline and social media visibility in modern collegiate recruitment.
From Catalan Rugby Roots to American Football Development
Before committing to American football, Gabarró’s early athletic background included motocross and rugby, sports deeply rooted in his family through the Unió Esportiva Santboiana, the oldest rugby club in Spain founded in 1921. He later discovered the sport while completing his fourth year of secondary education in Canada. Upon returning to Spain, he played for the team nearest his home before joining the Badalona Dracs.
“The NFL is the mezcla perfecta: similar in things to rugby with a helmet similar to a motorcycle’s,” Gabarró noted. Kris Durham, the head of the NFL Academy, emphasized the program’s holistic approach to developing athletes, citing education, life preparation, and networking alongside athletic performance.
Future Collegiate Plans and Upcoming Matchup Against Spain Under-19
Looking ahead, Gabarró aims to secure a roster spot at a United States university with a high level of football competition while pursuing a degree in economics or a related field. While acknowledging that the Los Angeles Olympic Games remain an option, he prioritizes his primary goal of reaching the NFL.
