Freida McFadden has taken the top spot on the French fiction bestseller list with her latest novel, Chere Debbie (City), outselling competitors after moving more than 32,000 copies in its first four days on shelves, according to industry sales data reported by Livres Hebdo.
Commercial Shift for American Author
The strong debut for Chere Debbie marks a notable commercial shift for the American suspense writer in France, which stands as her second-largest market behind the United States. While her breakout hit La Femme de ménage initially gained traction through a quiet release at City in early 2023 before exploding in paperback format via J’ai lu, her newer titles are now selling in grand format first.
According to publisher Frédéric Thibaud, the standard edition of Chère Debbie was accompanied by a special Fnac release. That novel moved more than 32,000 copies during its first days, taking the top spot in the Top 20 NielsenIQ BookData / Livres Hebdo.

Bestseller Rankings and New Entrants
Behind McFadden’s leading title, the fiction rankings featured several notable shifts during the week of October 4 to October 11, 2026. Giuliano da Empoli climbed to sixth place with Le Fondateur (Gallimard), while Thélyson Orélien’s C’était ça ou mourir (Grasset) continued a strong run toward the 100,000-copy milestone. Among nonfiction titles, Sarah Knafo held the first position with Le Casse du siècle (Fayard), closing in on 300,000 total sales.
Publishing industry figures also noted the performance of new arrivals on the weekly chart. Philippe de Villiers entered in second place among essays with Résurrection.
Marketing Campaigns and Future Releases
To sustain momentum for McFadden’s catalog—which spans 34 French references recorded by the Electre database since early 2023—publishers have leaned on targeted promotional campaigns.
Publishing executives report that the author continues to draw readers who rarely purchase books, cementing her commercial footprint in the country. The next major milestone for the franchise will arrive in November with the release of a graphic novel adaptation of La Femme de ménage by City, following international rights sales finalized at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
Unresolved Questions in the Autumn Publishing Cycle
As the French autumn literary season progresses, questions remain over how upcoming literary prizes will impact the wider market. Industry observers are watching to see if contenders for major autumn awards, such as François-Henri Désérable’s Le Palais (Gallimard) and Yannick Haenel’s La Solitude des professeurs est infinie (Gallimard), will break into the upper tier of sales following announcements from the Drouant restaurant juries.
