Historic Youth Olympic Debut Awaits Baseball5 in Dakar
The Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026 open on Oct. 30, 2026, marking the first time the International Olympic Committee has staged an Olympic event on the African continent. Across competitions scheduled in Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly through Nov. 13, 2026, the Games introduce a fast-growing urban discipline to the official program.
Under the organizing motto “Africa welcomes, Dakar celebrates,” the Youth Olympic Games bring together athletes aged 14 to 18 for a combined schedule of competition, cultural exchange, and educational workshops. The Comité National Olympique et Sportif Français reported that the program pairs high-level athletic meetings with collective youth engagement across host venues in Senegal.
Urban Baseball5 Enters the Olympic Program
For the Fédération Française de Baseball et Softball, Dakar 2026 represents a milestone as Baseball5 makes its official debut at the Youth Olympic Games. Eight national teams representing four different continents qualified for the inaugural tournament.
Played entirely without bats, gloves, or specialized protective gear, Baseball5 relies on a rubber ball and a five-on-five team structure. The compact format emphasizes speed, agility, and defensive coordination on urban street courts, lowering equipment barriers and enabling competition in public spaces.
France Prepares for the Preliminary Group Stage
The French national team travels to Senegal as one of the eight competing nations, entering the preliminary round in a group with Kenya, Syria, and Mexico. Competition in the Baseball5 tournament begins on Oct. 30, 2026—one day ahead of the official opening ceremony.

France’s representation extends beyond the field of play. Elsa Lepinay was selected to serve as the French delegation’s flagbearer, sharing the honor alongside coastal rowing athlete Raphaël de Boussac. Both athletes will carry the tricolor flag during the opening ceremony on Oct. 31, 2026.
Tournament Timeline and Medal Matches
The Baseball5 competition runs on an accelerated schedule at the start of the Youth Olympic Games, opening with preliminary matches on Oct. 30, 2026, when France meets Kenya in its tournament opener. Medal matches conclude on Nov. 3, 2026, before the broader Youth Olympic Games continue through the closing ceremony on Nov. 13, 2026.
