Formula 1 Return to Africa in Rwanda Planned via 10-Year Agreement

Formula 1 will return to the African continent for the first time since 1993 under a 10-year agreement to host the African Grand Prix in Rwanda starting in the early 2030s, championship organizers announced.

New Bugesera Circuit Construction Planned Near Kigali

The long-awaited return of Formula 1 to Africa involves building a brand-new racing facility in Bugesera, located approximately 40 kilometers south of Kigali. The circuit will sit adjacent to the region’s new international airport and will utilize the area’s natural elevation changes to craft a demanding layout for drivers, according to championship details. The facility aims to achieve a Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Grade 1 rating, which serves as a mandatory safety and operational requirement to host Formula 1 grands prix. Beyond race weekends, the venue is slated to host international sports events, conferences, and entertainment shows year-round.

Commercial Expansion and a 100 Million Fan Base

Formula 1 Chief Executive Officer Stefano Domenicali called the agreement a historic moment for the championship, noting that a return to Africa has been a multi-year ambition. Africa always has been part of the future of Formula 1 and from the beginning we were determined to return in the right way, with the right partner and a clear vision, Domenicali said. Championship data indicates that the African continent holds a fan base exceeding 100 million people, making the new fixture a key piece of the sport’s global market expansion.

Investment and Economic Impact for Rwanda

The grand prix project is structured to drive tourism, long-term employment, and commercial opportunities throughout Rwanda. President Paul Kagame described the agreement as a milestone for the entire region, stating that the development will generate jobs, training programs, and business growth. Rwanda has steadily increased its footprint in international sports hosting in recent years, staging the FIFA Congress in 2023 and the FIA General Assemblies in 2024.

FIA Collaboration and Infrastructure Timelines

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized the importance of the project for global motorsport development, confirming that the governing body will work closely with Formula 1 organizers to ensure the Bugesera layout satisfies international standards. The exact debut date for the first race remains contingent on the progression and completion of the construction work at the Bugesera site.
