Fluminense finished as the runners-up in the Campeonato Carioca Sub-20 Feminino after suffering a 2-1 defeat against Botafogo on Monday, October 12, at Estádio Nilton Santos.
How Botafogo Seized the Title at Nilton Santos
Entering the second leg of the final trailing 1-0 on aggregate from the opening match, Fluminense mounted an aggressive start. Forward Kaline created the visiting side’s best early opportunities, forcing a sharp save from the Botafogo goalkeeper in the 25th minute before nearly capitalizing moments later off a pass from Tainara. Despite sustained pressure from Beatriz, Kaline, and Tainara, Fluminense failed to convert their chances before the break. Right before halftime, Nayara struck in the final play of the opening period to give Botafogo the lead.
The Tricolor regrouped for the second half in search of an equalizer. Five minutes after the restart, Kaline threatened again before the home defense cleared the danger. The breakthrough arrived in the 57th minute when referee whistles sounded after Carioca was brought down inside the penalty area. Stefane stepped up to convert the spot-kick, leveling the score at 1-1 on the day.
Late Pressure and the Decisive Goal
With momentum swinging, Fluminense ramped up their attacking intensity. Head coach Barbara Saar’s side pressed for a winner, unleashing threats through Pinho, Carioca, and Mileninha. However, the visitors could not find a second goal to take control of the tie. With just five minutes remaining in regulation, Lorena struck in the 85th minute to restore Botafogo’s advantage, sealing the 2-1 victory and the state championship.
What Lies Ahead for the Tricolor Squad
Following the Carioca final defeat, Barbara Saar and her squad will turn their attention to national competition. The Fluminense under-20 women’s team returns to action in November to contest the Copinha Feminina.
